PPE without A-Level Maths

Currently, I’m a Year 12 Student studying A-Level Economics, Religion & Philosophy and Psychology.

I want to study Philosophy, Politics and Economics at a Russel Group University but I understand A-Level Math is generally a requirement for most of universities.

Will it be possible to get in if I meet the A*AA requirements? If so, will I struggle? For reference, I did manage to get an 8 in GCSE maths but seriously am regretting not taking it further!!

If A Level Maths is a requirement for that uni don't apply there, it will lead to rejection. You can use whatuni or ucas to find unis that offer ppe then you can look into whether they require A level maths. Just had a very quick look and Warwick, York and Leeds don't require it as long as you have a 7 at GCSE Maths. Good luck.

Thank you, I do wonder the general statistics for non A-Level maths students at these Unis though. I am quite worried that despite not requiring Math, it’ll still hinder my application. I suppose taking a gap year to do math is always possible though.

I understand your worries completely. I didn’t do A Level Further Maths but did do AS FM independently and applied to do a Maths and Economics degree at RG unis. Even though I applied to unis that didn’t require A Level Further Maths, I still thought not doing it will hinder my application significantly but I have got offers from the 3 unis that have replied so far. Go to open days if you can and try to speak to students doing PPE and see if they did A Level Maths or not.

Looking at UCAS historical data, York has a 100% offer rate, Leeds 85% and Warwick the toughest at 50%. Take this data with a pinch of salt because offer rates may increase or decrease but it can give you a general idea. Good luck.

Do keep in mind, the offer rates are the overall ones not the ones who didn’t do A Level Maths.

Thank you! Going to the open days seems like a great idea. I initially had my heart set on London university and I’ve seen KCL doesn’t require Maths but I can imagine it being very competitive. I’ll stay optimistic though!

Only way to guarantee not getting an offer is by not applying, I think it is very worthwhile to apply to KCL.
