sussex uni affordability??

hi! i'm looking into the costs of my uni offer locations and one of the major drawbacks for uni of sussex is the price of sussex / brighton. i loved it when i visited there but everything was noticeably more expensive than the equivalent prices up north.

how manageable is the cost difference? and, looking towards second and third year, in what price bracket does accommodation fall into after first year?

any input on this would be greatly appreciated!!

This will depend on how much maintenance loan you’ll get, whether parents can afford to financially support you (like are supposed to in theory), if you’ll receive scholarships/bursary etc or how much money you have saved up if any at all. Then you can do proper Maths to see if you can afford the higher cost of living or not.

A quick search on Student Roost for private accommodation in Brighton tells me that it costs 220+ a week for student accommodation (I’m not sure about a house share):

So definitely on the more expensive side.

When I was studying at Sussex uni, I lived off campus cause there wasn't enough accommodation left (I went through clearing) and it cost around £500 -£600 monthly which sometimes included bills and sometimes didn't. I lived fairly close to campus rather than in town, and prioritised being close to the bus stops so that may affect prices as well.

i did my undergrad at sussex after doing a year at a london uni. Brighton is just as expensive as london, rents are super high (i paid between 500-700 for a room with no bills included) and student properties are in awful condition. being near the sea, everything is mouldy (you need to ask a landlord for a dehumidifier).

You will 100% be paying more than up north, MUCH more.

however, brighton is a really unique and fun city, with great student clubs, events and community. the sea, the downs, the city. independent shops and bars (if you can afford to go out - Hare and Hound on a weds has student price drinks).

I still live here 2 years after finishing my undergrad, so what does that say!
