How can I be useful in a internship?

Hii I got a internship government department (think mod for example)in a data analysis/science type role. I study a econ and I wanted to develop my numerical applied skills.

I had a casual chat with a senior and he said they use python and R (I can use basic R) , and be able to use and other things.

My question is do you guys know how to learn those and secondly be seen as useful? They don't have high expectation and seem supportive as most civil service roles seem but obviously show potential and do more?? Yk even if I don't convert it which civil service roles don't from what I understand

Thank you
