I'm looking at my options after graduating and I'm very interested in the NHS Scientist Training Programme (STP). However, I'm not keen on staying in the UK long term due to a number of factors (added at bottom of post, but you can probably guess them).
Once I've done my master's, I'm looking at moving to Australia or Germany, but I'm open to other European countries and to Japan potentially.
Are there equivalents to the Scientist Training programme in other countries and are they open to international applicants?
Notes:
I'm unhappy with the cost of living in the UK as my money simply no longer goes as far. 5 years ago I could afford a lovely 2 bed flat in Glasgow (no roommate), no car. Now I cannot afford to live without a roommate and the cost of food and transport is constantly increasing. Salaries are not increasing with inflation but costs are going up.
The political climate in the UK makes me sad. [Do not read if you're politically sensitive, this is my honest opinion] Ten years ago we seemed to be moving forward but many things in this country are getting worse, we have a housing crisis, increasing nationalism, the biggest one for me, the NHS is really broken. To avoid doxxing myself I won't state the disease but I was seriously ill last year and it took 8 hours in A&E to be seen and I didn't get any diagnostic tests for 8 months. Don't get me wrong once I was seen healthcare was good, but the wait times are going to kill people soon if the government doesn't act. No one in government seems to be actually fixing anything imho. Science is suffering in this country since we left the EU leading to a shift of trials to America.
I have SAD (seasonal affective disorder) which makes winter challenging for me every year. So even moving to a European country will improve my symptoms by giving more winter daylight. I love heat and summer and hot weather, I take 40C very well.
Notes on language:
I'm B1 in German language so Germany seems the most obvious choice.
Japan would be a long shot but I'd consider it as I have basic Japanese and have visited the country before.
The USA is off my list since Trump got in, the politics over there are scary.
