SOAS opinions

I’m considering Soas for a masters in international justice/human rights as i love the look of the course, however, i have health issues and struggled a lot with the change and being independent at undergraduate at a uni close to my family. Are Soas supportive with health issues and disability? And im scared i would feel really lonely there as its not a campus uni and is in London which isn’t exactly known for friendliness, any experience of the social life/ease of meeting friends at SOAS?

SOAS is a very small community and you could make friends readily.

Although the buildings are very close together, I suggest you pay a visit there to see whether accessibility would be s concern.

Hi @Blblblb101,

I hope you are well.

It may be worth reaching out to our disability team to learn more about the services SOAS offers, as well as any adjustments that can be made if you were to study at SOAS. Here is their email address: [email protected].

Regarding social life, it is what you make it. SOAS is a very small community and quite close-knit. There are loads of Societies and Sports Teams that host events every week during term time. These are great opportunities to meet people during movie nights, debate nights or game nights. Departments also host academic talks and networking opportunities, which are great for socialising with people who have similar interests to you.

Overall, I would say studying at SOAS has been a blast. I know pretty much everyone in my year and they are all lovely. I have found being at a smaller university easier because everyone knows everyone so it's hard to feel like you are alone. London can be intimidating but many societies host events where they travel to different parts of London in groups, like bowling nights or going to the Winter Wonderland trips during the festive season.

It might be a good idea to reach out to our students on Unibuddies to hear some more about different students' experiences and have any of your questions answered.

I hope this helps 🙂
