What exactly are you looking for? If you want to live in a bigger city, Edinburgh is perfect. If you prefer a tiny city the size of a small town, then Durham is for you. Durham is collegiate, so you can get to know people in that environment quite well, and you can enjoy the pretentious formal dinners. Edinburgh is much larger, and they boast ancient buildings on a greater scale, and throughout the city. Durham is a small, working class city, and Edinburgh is a medium sized middle class city that people really like from across the globe. Edinburgh and Durham both have excellent reputations in the UK, but Edinburgh has a much stronger international reputation as a uni.

Overall l would personally choose Edinburgh, because the city is so beautiful, and the majority of people living there are so classy and well educated. Durham isn't a bad city, but it isn't the best either. It is just small, and a bit rough with poverty in places.

Thanks! I think in terms of what I'm looking for is a city vibe but also somewhere I can meet people easily. I think the main thing I care about is reputation of the uni/ education quality. I think I am leaning towards Edinburgh atm but the only thing drawing me towards Durham is the colleges and how easy it would be to socialise in that kind of environment. Your reponse has been super helpful so thankyou!!

You might live in Edinburgh after you graduate from there. It is the best city in the UK.

My son had same choice. Edinburgh has been an amazing city and he has got fantastic music and journalism opportunities which he loves. His mates who went to Durham have found meeting and socialising easier because of the college system. I also think teaching groups are smaller at Durham. Edinburgh uni is vast and especially in first 2 years teaching can be a bit hit and miss. Overall he's loving the opportunities Edinburgh brings. It's a brilliant city....but it can be a bit luck who you end up sharing with in first year as to how you enjoy the social life. There's no right answer on this one. They are both fantastic universities and you'd probably have a great time at both. It just depends on your priorities.

Durham isn't anywhere near the level of Edinburgh academically for most subjects. Durham really excels in a few subjects, such as Law, English, and the Humanities. But beyond that, Edinburgh is much stronger, and is ranked very much higher in global rankings. And even in the subjects Durham is good at, Edinburgh is either a match, or at worst, almost a match for reputation.

The issue with a collegiate system is that it can lead to some students trying to power grab the other college students, so that a lot of them dance to their tune. Though of course, only 4 colleges at Durham are not glorified student halls.
