I need guidance, please help 29 M.

Hi,

I hope you're well.

I graduated at the age of 24 with a 2:1 in Mathematics, then COVID occurred and my interviews were cancelled, I got my graduate job at 26 years old with Accenture. But the start date was 10 months later, I accepted and waited.

However, about 1.5 years into Accenture, they made my role//our roles redundant, pretty much most of my cohort was made redundant.

Every since then - November 2023, I have been unable to get a job. I don't know if its because of the redundancy but most of the time I am rejected because I graduated in 2019. I am not a "recent graduate", I had been trying to apply to graduate schemes proactively since Q3 of 2024. I've been unsuccessful and graduate roles have dried up recently. I could really use some guidance on what I should do next. I feel extremely lost. I was mentally pretty strong at the start but its gone down so much... just questions about why am I still unemployed... or that I should give up... I don't even know anymore.

The roles I've predominantly applied for are Data Analytics, Analytics roles, Asset Management.. I have tried Apprenticeships but they say I am ineligible...

I understand my situation is unique.. I would be happen to discuss any advice.

Thanks.

When I applied for mid-level roles, they said I was inexperienced, even for Software Engineering roles which are direct experience. I've had better chances getting further applying for grad roles which are basically entry level positions. I've also not applied for SE, more applying for Risk Management roles, and that previous experience is mostly irrelevant.

There's a wide gap between graduate roles and mid-level roles. You need to refine your search strategy because your position is very far from unique, but you seem to be scatter gunning everywhere, which probably isn't helping.

Even if you wan tot change route, you don't have enough experience to do that in one whole step, so you need to search for something that builds directly on your Accenture experience, or takes just a very small step sideways.

Look for organisations that have a high turnover of staff, that's large organisations and public sector, so the NHS, universities, local government etc. Consider organizations that have back office needs, like the police, fire service, manufacturing companies.

Look locally and start with somewhere smaller, reduce the competition by looking for small adverts that don't reach thousands, increase your odds.

Above all, see this next job as a 2 year step, not a full career destination

Hi Panda,

I hope you're doing well.

I empathise with the challenges you are facing in your job search. The current job market, particularly for young individuals, can be daunting and lead to feelings of uncertainty.

One suggestion I can offer is to leverage the power of LinkedIn. Consider refining your job search to focus on entry-level positions rather than mid-senior roles.

Drawing from my personal experience, I initially held an accounts assistant position and was subsequently promoted to client account manager. After approximately a year, I made the decision to leave due to financial concerns and poor money management practices within the company. This prompted me to explore different roles and opportunities, and I am currently employed in the finance sector within the music industry, which I find so interesting.

I utilised LinkedIn a lot and applied for numerous jobs and discovered that recruiters on the platform provided invaluable assistance in securing interviews and employment. While your years of experience are a strong asset, it may be the specific level of roles you are applying for that is causing the issue—either being too late for graduate positions or lacking sufficient experience for mid-level roles.

I understand the extended period of unemployment that can be disheartening. It took me over a year to find a job after graduation, and it is normal to experience mental fatigue during this process. However, it is crucial to maintain a positive outlook and persevere. Consider exploring different roles that may align with your interests and passions.

Hi Panda, How's your Situation now? Read this and first thing that jumped out to me was Google. Network with folk on linkedin, build a serious project and get some users, get referrals, Leetcode like a mad man, then apply. Google/FAANG WILL give you a chance.
