Dissertation and Essay Writing Tips

Having trouble with your writing assignments or dissertation?
Here are a few tips and academic resources available to aid you in your writing assignments

Start Early
As much as it is easier said than done, starting a written assignment early gives you time to do your research, think through, edit, and refine your essay before submitting it. I am not sure about you but I take ages to write my essays and can spend hours staring at a few sentences. To avoid last minute writing or stressing over my assignments, I always try my best to start my written assignments early.

iCAT Library Resources
Searching indexes and going through physical copies of academic books can be really time consuming and boring! Instead of using unreliable online sources, using Kingston’s iCAT online library resources is far quicker. From online databases, academic journals to e-books, simply breeze through your readings by searching up key words instead of scouring pages and pages of text to find the key points you are looking for.

Email Your Tutor!!!
If you are unsure about anything or need help with finding relevant academic text, I would always recommend emailing your tutor with an outline of your assignment! It could just be in point form but whenever i’m stuck in a pickle or facing a writing block, having a second opinion always helps!

Academic Writing Support Services
If english is not your first language or you simply need additional academic writing support, Kingston University runs online Academic and Professional Development Courses that you can self enrol on. Many of the classes are live streamed and recorded on Canvas so you can refer back to them. The programme also offers 1 to 1 tutorials for individual writing assignments that lasts for 30 mins each throughout the year (you just have to book a week in advance).

What are some of your academic writing tips? How do you like to start your writing process?
