Durham Colleges

Guys…what Durham colleges are the best?

I need to rank the colleges but I’m clueless on what’s the best.

I’m looking for a self catered one as I want the freedom to cook myself.

Not bothered if it’s gowned or not.

I’m also looking for an en suite.

Finally (sounds like I’m asking for a lot) I want it to be socialable with a good bar etc.

Can anyone give any insight?

Hey! I’m a current Durham student at a catered college, but I can give you some advice.

It sounds like Stephenson or Josephine Butler would be a fair match for you - the people I know from there are sociable and both have very good bars along with being self catered. Also at JBs it looks like all first year rooms are ensuite.

Hild bede is also a good shout, however if your planning to study something STEM like I would not recommend just based on how far away it is from the lectures.

On the subject of bars, outside of freshers week anyone from any college can attend each college bar - I’ve probably spent more time in other college bars than I have my own 😂

Also I wouldn’t say any college is “best”, most people end up loving the one they’re allocated, even if it doesn’t have everything they were looking for originally.

Hope this helps

Hi!

Fortunately for you, most colleges that are self-catered also have a lot of en-suites so you have a lot of options to choose from!

I'd recommend checking out the college prospectus here just to get an idea about which colleges are catered/self-catered and how many en-suites they have but from what I know, I think Jospehine Butler College, Stephenson College, John Snow College, South College and the College of St Hilde and St Bede might be some good bets for you! Personally, I really love the atmosphere of my college (John Snow) because it's really laid back and has a really nice home-y feel but I definitely would recommend coming to a post-offer visit day if you can to check out the culture of the colleges (as they can be quite different!)

University (Castle) College and St Cuthbert's Society do also have some self-catered options but that depends on whether you manage to get a room in specific accommodation blocks so if you're really dead set on getting a self-catered room, maybe avoid those ones.

Hope this helps!

P.S. Colleges can really vary by how many students share a "shared" bathroom. For example, if you live in college in John Snow, our townhouses have only two students sharing a bathroom but I know the number can be higher in other colleges, especially the older ones. I'd say that before ranking your colleges, it is worth finding out what exactly "shared" bathrooms look like before going off purely by how many en-suites they have.

Hi!

Great choice! As someone who is now a Snowman, I can confirm it is indeed the best college (but of course I would say that hahaha)
I hope you get assigned to one of your top picks. Good luck!
