transition to year 12

hellooo, i was wondering if anyone has advice about transitioning to year 12 and starting a levels, prepping for uni etc. i'm someone who needs to be really organised beforehand and i failed to do that during gcses, so i just ended up feeling really overwhelmed. it doesn't impact my grades, but i just feel like my organisation reflects my state of mind. so i can't wait to finish gcses and get rid of (almost) everything related to it and have a fresh start over the summer. but i wanted some advice from u guys so i can prepare for what i'll need to do. for context i hope to study math, fm, art and spanish, and the end goal is architecture, so advice for collecting supercurriculars is also appreciated! anything from idk, equipment needed, book recs, laptop organisation, useful apps and so on. thank u

Okay,

For Y12 in my opinion all you really need is a very good foundation in the GCSEs that your A-Level is based off if it is STEM based, I can’t speak much for other non STEM subjects but I know that in Chemistry, Biology and Maths there is a lot of linking back to the basics before covering key knowledge.

Nothing excessive though, just try keep it consistent. I wish I had done that, I reckon I would’ve caught onto things a lot quicker lol

I’ve just seen your subjects my bad, maths and further maths you definitely need to be solid with the concepts, so try get a question a day done or even start the A-Level content early. I don’t think the jump is particularly high. Just make sure to try and get familiar with using YouTube channels like Bicenmaths imo because he’s super helpful and records his actual lessons so I feel like he is able to break down things much more easily.

Maybe for your supercurriculars do the maths challenges that are hosted (if your school offers them. Getting a bronze silver or gold award helps to show you have passion for maths.

Not sure about your other subjects but I’m sure there will be people with much more helpful feedback.

Hey @sunflowerglue,

Depending on where you're based, there may be some local art competitions run by nearby museums/organisations. These are great supercurriculars for anyone interested in pursuing artistic fields, as they can help you get started on building some portfolio pieces for university applications and demonstrate a long-term interest in art. You can also ask your art teacher about any competitions aimed at A-Level students - I know some schools particularly encourage students to enter the Young Artists' Summer Show at the RSA.

For another supercurricular, you could also consider taking an evening art class at a local further education college - I took a life-drawing class in Year 13 that ran for an hour once a week for six weeks. It was a great experience to talk about during interviews, and some of the work I produced was put in my A-Level Art sketchbook as well. 🙂

Hope this was helpful and best of luck,
Eve (Kingston Rep).
