S6 subjects for medical school advice

Hello, I’m currently in S5 and I’m taking three social science/humanity. I wasn’t able to take the usual five subjects because of my mental health.

I’m now interested in medical school, but I don’t really know if I’m eligible to apply for it. I was always originally planning on taking maths, chemistry, and biology for S6. I’ve already done national 5 for the three subjects, so taking highers wouldn’t be an issue. But I’ve seen most, if not all medical schools in Scotland say that it has to be done in one sitting or advanced highers.

I was just wondering if there’s other ways for me to apply or other paths for me to take.

For undergraduate medicine, they ask for 5 highers at an A/maybe one B depending on the school(in one sitting). Then, they'd ask for minimum 2 B's at advanced higher in S6. It is not the route everyone takes.

There are other pathways, such as graduate entry medicine, where you first apply to a course like biomedical sciences, do the course and then apply to medicine after you have the degree. (you would usually need to achieve a first/second class honours to have a chance, which means top 10%ish of grades in your year)

Alternatively, there are gateway to medicine programmes, meaning that you do a foundation year, one year of study comparable to that of advanced higher work, before you are entered into the medicine course. For these, the grades required are usually less, needing highers at lower grades.

You should have a look on the uni's websites that you are interested in to find out more.

If you have any more questions, I'll do my best to answer them.
