MSc Social Work - Funding

Hi everyone,

I’m looking for some advice regarding funding for the MSc Social Work course at Huddersfield University.

I have previously received Student Finance for both an undergraduate and a postgraduate course, and I’m unsure whether I would still be eligible for funding from Student Finance England (SFE) for this degree.

At the moment, I’m undecided on whether to study full-time or part-time, so any advice on funding options for both study modes would be greatly appreciated.

If anyone has been through a similar situation or has any insights, I’d love to hear your experiences!

Thanks in advance.
Hi there. You are only entitled to one Postgraduate masters loan from SLC. This means since you already hold a masters degree you wouldn't be eligible for further funding for this course. Thanks, Leah.

Hello!

I do not hold one - I had to withdraw due to mental health and the lack of support from university. I understand even then.. funding would not be available. Correct me if I am wrong.

Hi there,

Yes, that's right - it's possible to get another Postgraduate Loan if you had Compelling Personal Reasons (CPR) for not completing the previous course.

Do you know when you plan to being the new masters course?

Thanks, Graeme

Hi Graeme

I did consider applying for CPR for funding - I am considering September 2025 or 2026. I am looking further into requirements to determine but trying to get everything prepared as soon as possible if I pursue September 2025

Okay, thanks - when the 25/26 applications open this Summer you can submit a Masters application, and include proof of CPR. If that's all acceptable you can get another Masters Loan.

You may have seen something like this, but this is what we can accept regarding CPR: https://www.gov.uk/guidance/going-back-to-uni-or-repeating-a-year

Thanks, Graeme

Another query - if I did not want to pursue with Masters but a BA in Social Work - what is the circumstances around that?
Hi there,

What university would you attend and what would the duration be for the Ba in Social Work? To confirm you already hold an undergraduate degree?

Thanks, Drew

Hi Drew,

Current Degree: LLB (Hons) Law (Graduated 2020)
Considering the following Universities & Timescales:
- University of Leeds (3 years)
- Leeds Beckett University (3 years)
- University of Bradford (3 years)
- University of Huddersfield (4 years)
- University of York (4 years)

I am at the beginning of my research into the Universities, thus the additional query.

Thanks!
Hi there,

These courses are classed as an exception courses. This means you would be eligible to apply for the Maintenance Loan and Supplementary Grants. You would not be eligible for the Tuition Fee Loan so you would need to self fund to pay for the course.

Thanks, Drew
