25 fall Cambridge Computer Science PhD application

I submitted my application for a PhD in Computer Science at the University of Cambridge in November and was interviewed in early January, where I was told it would take a few weeks to make a decision. At present, my application status in the application system is still "Under review by department".

Has anyone also applied for a PhD in Computer science? What is the status of your application?

Same situation here - applied before the funding deadline, had an interview early January, and my application is still in "Under review by department" stage 😅

Hi, as an update I received an offer by the department on Friday 15th if that's useful. I was told on the phone that they have sent out all of their offers for this round.

"They have sent out all the offers for this round" - only CS phd or CS mphil as well?

Did you contact them over email or phone?

Thanks for sharing!

What is a "round" in this context, does anyone know?

I am wondering whether there will be subsequent such "rounds" (so we can keep fingers crossed) or whether at this point those who didn't receive an offer are basically just waiting for the rejection confirmation :')

Sorry I used the word "round" rather casually - I meant Oct 25 entry.

I was told on the phone that they had X number of applicants and have admitted Y, which has led me to think they've sent out all decisions by now. My portal did not update however, I just received an email from the CS department. It may be that certain supervisors haven't sent their recommendations to the dept yet but I'm not sure.

Hope this helps!

Thanks! It seems to be a double-edged sword, as it seems like a lot of people with offers don't end up get funding which is basically not an offer imo. Seems a bit silly that Cambridge do it this way but what can you do.

If anyone else has experience with this and knows some statistics that would be great!

I have heard from my supervisor that there is at least a second batch.

What exactly did your supervisor say? And what determines what batch(es) people get put into?

Thanks for your sharing! If you don't mind, can you tell me what X and Y are roughly? I'm just curious how competitive CS PhD is at a university like Cambridge. I also applied to universities in the United States. As far as I know, some of the schools I applied to have an acceptance rate of about 1% to 3%.

I can't remember the exact numbers, but I calculated the percentage and it was around 10%. Keep in mind this is not with funding, which is an added layer of competitiveness. I don't have a good impression of how competitive this is, as it depends on a range of factors: nationality, academic merit, dept, supervisor, group, college .etc.

Did your supervisor say if those not in the first batch have a much lower chance of funding?

I'm not sure how the 'batches' work as I didn't know that was a thing until now. I expect a second batch would have a lower chance of funding as the department told me they've already ranked those admitted and submitted to the funding bodies.

Did anyone get recommend for Gates ? How does it usually work? Only one person from a dept gets nominated and that includes both Mphil and PhD?

Has anyone with a CS PhD offer received the official email from the PAO following the offer letter from dept? I emailed Lise Gough and she says that they are being slow on this, which is reassuring I guess. From what I understand, once these emails are out offer holders can access CamSIS and view college applications. Has anyone got any news RE this or colleges?
