I’m going to be studying maths and statistics at uni this year and i am getting an ipad but i also need a laptop. Is a laptop with 16GB RAM and i5 okay??

I would reallllly go for a Laptop with i17 or a Ryzen 7. Just to make it sweeter and the cost wont be that extra. Try a HP Pavillion (anyone of those that fits the criteria should be fine) for example.

A laptop with 0 GB RAM would be OK as long as it's not soldered RAM only. Because used laptop RAM sticks are cheap. And easy to fit. And RAM tends to be reliable and long lasting enough that buying used at the right price is fine.

i5 what? Laptops with a 1st gen i7 would be pants. Laptops with 11th gen i5's would be total over-kill for a maths and statistics student.

You haven't told us your mobility profile. What sot of physical build you are, eg are you American Footballer size?. How much you expect to carry your laptop on foot or public transport.
This will determine the best size of laptop for you.

A used premium business laptop for less than £250 from Ebay is the sweet spot for laptops for general use. There's a big difference in the engineering quality between premium business laptops and consumer grade laptops.
Models like the HP 840 G8 and HP 845 G7. Or HP 830 G8.
