Reading Native here - we have a few clubs and a lot of pubs. Prices vary, you would probably want to do pres before going into town. We have two spoons (The Hope Tap, which is more central and normally quite busy - and then The Back and Beyond which is about a 8 or 10 minute walk from The Hope Tap) which are fine. If you don't like the Spoons, there are a few good pubs - I like the Outlook (near Back and Beyond) and the Three Tuns (near Sol Joel Park).

The Purple Turtle tends to be the best of our clubs - main floor is normally whatever, basement is usually electronic music and there is an outside area and a hookah lounge if you are into that. I will admit that I do not go out much nowadays, but this seems to be where people I know enjoy going.

We also have a few live music venues, such as The Face Bar and Sub89 - sometimes there are gigs at the Rising Sun Arts Centre or the Global Cafe (they normally have fun stuff like Jazz or world music). There is a Polish bar in Thilehurst which has a pretty lively music scene.

Quite a few food places stay open late, most people will gravitate towards the McDonalds on friar street (just down the road from the Hope Tap).

Some bus routes run all night (mainly the 21 for Uni/Lower Earley, 5/6 for Whitley and 17 for Tilehurst and towards the Three Tuns.

I think Reading isn't awful - its quite a lively night town, and attracts quite a lot of people from the surrounding areas as well.

I don't think its dangerous, though there are quite a few places I would avoid going on my own at night however - and we have a bit of a crackhead begging problem at night as well, which is normally isolated to the station during the day but they roam at night.

Good evening,

Congratulations on your offer to the university.

There is a nightclub on campus which is called the 3sixty; you can see the events that occur there. There is also a selection of Bars & Pubs on campus. Alternatively, there is an array of pubs and clubs in the Reading Town Centre.

The transport links into the main town are great, and we have a regular bus service which runs every 10 minutes from the middle of the whiteknights campus. There are two different buses. One goes to the local Asda, and the other goes directly into town, where lots of grocery shops, clothing shops, and train stations can be found.

Generally speaking, the town centre has a lot to do, including sports activities such as bowling. There are also great places to eat out, and there are also a lot of shops in the local town.

Similarly, when you first arrive at the university, there is freshers' week, and this is a great time to become orientated within the university; it gives you time to know where everything is and settle in before lessons start. Similarly, there are society and sports fairs where you can get lots of free things such as sweets and stationery and learn all about the different societies you can join. I highly recommend going to a free society taster session as it lets you find out if you like any of the societies before starting them.

You can find the RSU Sports Clubs and the Societies, which are run by the student union. There is also a selection Student activities which occur through out the year.

At the end of every year, there is a Summer Ball, which is a large festival-like event. There is live music on different stages, a theme park, and lots of food and drink vendors. It's seen as one the highlights of the year.

I hope this has answered your questions and provided an overview of what the university has to offer.

If you have any questions, please let us know.

All the best,
Ella,
BSc Ecology
