Applying Graduate entry medicine/ucat

Hey Guys,

I found other people’s stories when applying for graduate medicine really helpful when I started thinking about applying. So I thought I would share my story incase it helps anyone feel more confident about their applications.

I’m 32, and have a background in music. No science background. I decided to take the UCAT exam as GAMSAT sciences seemed unreachable for me in a short space of time. I didn’t achieve the UCAT score I wanted and achieved 2550. I was gutted as I thought I’d ruined my chances. However I got offered an interview at Warwick. The interview went really well and I was offered a place yesterday to study medicine with them! I couldn’t believe it.

I think this definitely proves that graduate medicine is achievable, even if you feel totally under qualified. I remember reading how hard it was to get in and I nearly didn’t bother. But now I’m so glad I did.

Just to add, although I don’t have background in science I did hold a first degree in Music and first MA in music so I think that helped.

Yes as part of your application you need to do a certain amount of hours and in at least 2 different roles. I worked as a phlebotomist as bank staff and observed an osteopath

What was your interview about? What did you speak about/do that made you think wow this is going really well.

They are mini-interviews so each station was essentially scenario or them asking about your work experience. I didn’t know how it went at the time but must have gone really well as I don’t think I would have got in with a low UCAT score otherwise.
