Degree Apprenticeship Questions

Degree apprenticeships can be a great alternative to university and are offered in lots of different subjects.
Today I am going to share some answers to common questions about degree apprenticeships so you have everything you need to start your apprenticeship search!

What qualification do you get?
If you complete a higher apprenticeship, then you will get a higher education qualification such as a HND or a foundation degree.
If you complete a degree apprenticeship, then you will get a full bachelor’s or master’s degree.

What are the benefits for apprentices?
There are quite a few! Including:
- You will earn a salary from your employer whilst studying.
- You will gain real work experience.
- You'll gain lots of knowledge from the degree side and get to try this out on the job.
- You will have access to a wide range of support services from the university as you will be a student.

How do I become an apprentice?
You will apply through the employer as you need to be employed to do an apprenticeship. The website ‘Find an Apprenticeship’ can be used to search for vacancies at companies that run apprenticeship programmes.

Applications are similar to job applications so you may be asked to attend interviews and submit a CV.

How long are apprenticeships?
This can vary, typically they are between 3 and 5 years.

How much does it cost?
Nothing! The cost is covered by your employer so you will not build up any student debt. You will also be paid a salary by your employer whilst completing the apprenticeship.

Hi @Paul Adeeeee

My advice would be:

Make sure you that read the job description really carefully so that you can link your answers to it. If there are specific skills that they are looking for then try to include them in you answers to the application questions.

Try to get some relevant work experience. Consider how any experiences you already have could be useful to you as a degree apprentice.

Show why you want to do the apprenticeship - what is it about the course or career that particularly interests and inspires you?

Does anyone else have any tips?

Hope that helps!

I’m looking to do a degree apprenticeship for diagnostic radiography but there are no jobs hiring in Birmingham at the moment. Do you know when the applications come out?

Hi @amina_123?

There is no specific application cycle for apprenticeships as it is dependent on when the employers are hiring. I would recommend that you keep checking the NHS website so that you can see when there are vacancies.

Hi Sophie, apologies if this is a weird question just feeling slightly nervous. If you have an offer for a degree apprenticeship, do you just need to meet the minimum requirements? I assume the university provider will accept you as long as you meet those. Thanks in advance.

The employer handles that.
If they’ve sent you an offer, you can assume you’ve been accepted by the uni too.
