Hi there,
Things to do in York! So first things first, I will split this down based on activities etc that might tailor to things you may like.
Physical Activities
The Hilt - This is axe throwing venue that is good to do with friends. This is in the centre of York near Wagamamas so easy to get to. Only downside is that the opening times can vary a bit and is not open a lot of the time.
Hollywood Bowl - This is a great place for students. Doing bowling, crazy golf and a few arcade machines, if your friend has a car this a good place to go to, otherwise you can get the Park and Ride there which is also quite quick. It is very cheap, with student discount you can get offers for two games of bowling with any two drinks for £15.
Roxy Ball Room - This is also a good place to go with friends in the city centre, lots of different activities that go on here as well. Only downside is that it is quite expensive.
Walking - If you like going through the environment, there are some good walks around York. This is mainly around the train station walking down the River Ouse or on the other side of York heading down towards Fulford on the River Ouse again. Otherwise, in terms of cycle paths and walking, there are loads of places you can do.
Tennis/Skatepark - In the Rowntree and Hull Rd Park they both have Tennis Courts and Rowntree park has a skateboarding park if you're interested. Also, good areas to chill out in.
Cafes, Places to Eat, Shopping
Coffee Culture - Personal favourite, if you're bored and just want to have food and do work etc. Highly recommend this place, they have godly sandwiches and toasties.
Shopping - If you're interested in Shopping, have a look at Designer Outlet, Monks Cross & Clifton Moor. They have a range of stores and all have buses to get to them.
Brew York - This is a good place if you like your Ales and Beers, they have loads of craft beers and they are weirdly in a back street. Still popular though.
Keystones - This is a good student hub for YSJ students, they are a very friendly student bar and have a pool table and darts.
Students' Union & Volunteering
Societies and Sports Clubs - If you are really bored and want something a bit more consistent, join a society! For sports clubs, depending on how serious you want to play, they usually do development plans to improve your fitness or skills as well. Not only that but usually you will get access to a load of perks too like gym discounts etc. For YSJ it gives you access to the Sports Campus gym for example.
University Sessions - I will use YSJ as an example as I am not 100% sure what Uni of York have to offer, but for YSJ we also do student social sport sessions. For example, I do a lot of football and take part in 6 aside as well as the Friday Night Pitchup where everyone comes down for £1 and just plays football. I've just started the badminton one as well on a Monday again for a £1 so it is really good.
Volunteering - If you want to do something more productive that fills the time, try volunteering somewhere! Even if it is in the uni or SU, doesn't have to be something consistent just as long as you help out, it will be a good CV boost and does good for the community.
This is obviously very summed up and there is wayyyy more to offer, I haven't even touched all the touristy/history side of York. But if you are interested on what some YSJ students recommend, I would look at our Instagram page, there are always students showing their experience on there.
Hope this helps!
Koen.
