Electrical and Electronic Engineering Firm and Insurance Choice

My predicted grades are A*AA (Business studies, Maths, Computer Science) and I have received the following offers:
Southampton - AAA,
Bath - ABB (A in maths),
Bristol - ABB (A in maths),
Cardiff - ABB,
Nottingham - BBB

I'm struggling to decide which to make my firm and which to make my insurance choice, could anyone tell me what they think I should choose?

A helpful way of starting is to consider if you want to do an industrial year.

I did and was really glad I had. It gave me a break from studying and an insight to how my degree could relate to "proper" work. The pay is really helpful as well!

I also ended up working for the same company after graduation.

Lastly have a good look at the course structure and talk to existing students - finally lots of unis are having offer holder days, these could help as well.

(I think there is very little chance that I get below ABB (A in maths) and I am more interested in the electronic side rather than the high voltage stuff)
Hiya,

Well done on your grades, first of all. They are a fantastic achievement! Hodders68 brought up some brilliant points. You've talked about preferring electronics stuff over voltage - most course pages will describe the modules you'll be covering. For Cardiff's course page, if you click a specific module heading, it'll show the module description and learning objectives. Unfortunately, I'm not an engineering student so I don't have the slightest clue where the teaching leans more towards haha, but hopefully it helps.

A particular benefit I would say about the Cardiff course is that there are external scholarships available, associated with the course. It's also pretty flexible in the sense that you can make your degree your own with the flexibility to choose where you want to focus your studies later in the course.

I'd also say there's also a lot to consider other than the course itself. For example location, student accommodation, what kind of campus vibe you're looking for, activities, cost of living etc. It's important to enjoy where you're studying - as you'd be living there for 3 or so years! There's a bunch of stuff about Cardiff that I could talk about, but let me know if you wanted to know about anything in particular

Hi there,

Great to hear you've got offers from all of your choices, it sounds like you have a really good selection!

You are the best judge of which uni will be right for you. I would firstly consider which course (down to the module content) sounds like it suits your interests and aspirations most, interests you more, inspires you more. I'd then try to think about which uni you feel most 'at home' at - have you visited the campuses? If you have not then you could always check out any virtual 3D tours those unis have. Similar with the city - Bath and Southampton are on the small side with perhaps a cosier, town-like feel, whereas the others are more medium-sized cities with a bit of a different feel. Have you visited them yet? What did you think? Could you see yourself happily living there for 3-4 years?

I'd also definitely consider whether or not you'd like to do a placement. As someone who did one at Bath I'd hugely recommend it as has been said above. It is a good chance to do something fun and different for a year to give you a break from academia, it will add its weight in gold to your graduate CV and also give you the chance to earn some money and maybe get your foot in the door for future employment. Almost all of Bath's courses offer versions with a year in industry and we have one of the best, most well-supported, well-connected placement schemes in the country. Defo something to think about!

Have you tried writing a pros and cons list for each uni and seeing if one emerges as your winner?

I hope some of this helped - I'm confident that having chosen five strong unis, whichever you go for you'll make some great memories and have a very high quality academic experience 🙂

Best of luck!

Dear student

Congratulations on receiving such great offers! It’s fantastic that you have so many strong choices, but if you are looking for a university that balances academic excellence with an incredible student experience, the University of Southampton is an amazing option.

Southampton’s MEng Electrical and Electronic Engineering program is designed for students like you who are more interested in the electronic side rather than high-voltage topics. The course covers cutting-edge fields like AI, robotics, and microelectronics, with access to world-class labs and industry connections that will set you up for success. Plus, Southampton is ranked among the best for engineering, so you’re will be learning from top researchers and industry leaders.

Beyond academics, Southampton has so much to offer! The city is vibrant, with a great student community, beautiful parks, and a buzzing waterfront. The university itself has a fantastic Students Union, sports facilities, and over 200 societies, so there’s always something to do outside of studying.

With your predicted grades, Southampton would be a strong and ambitious firm choice giving you the opportunity to study at a top-ranked university while ensuring a great balance of academic and student life. It highly recommend considering it as your firm choice! If you have any questions, feel free to ask I’m happy to help!

Best wishes

Thanks for the responses. I am going to attend the offer holder days for all 5 universities and then I'll make my decision after that. I was also wondering is there any difference in reputation/prestige from these universities, or do their names all more or less hold the same weight?

My personal impression is that you've picked pretty solid, prestigious universities, overall! When it comes to specifics, honestly I think that depending on whoever you ask, will tell you a different opinion based on their own experiences and thoughts about universities. It also depends on what you're looking for, in my opinion, like are you looking for a uni more reputable for their courses, student life, or employability?

For me personally, when I'm asking about reputation, I'm trying to consider my job prospects. I think useful indicators of prestige might be the Global University Employment Ranking , for example, or any information universities tell you about employability or careers, as it tells you who is being employed after their degrees

I hope that's helped a little bit!
