Choosing between colleges: Furness, Grizedale, Pendle

Hi, I am an offer holder for MSci Biology at Lancaster and I am trying to choose between a few collages. The three I am trying to choose between are Grizedale, Furness and Pendle. What is each college like? What's the community like, and the events and just the overall vibe? What are the buildings and facilities like? I don't mean the rooms, all three collages have the type of room that I want, I mean like communal and social areas.
Hi @ZebraShark !

Each college is a little different every year because of the change in members, so it's honestly hard to say what a college is like. Although there may be stereotypes about colleges, i.e. that some are "more sporty", because the community is changing every year, the events held by the college/JCRs also change. In terms of buildings and facilities, if possible I would come to the Offer Holder events/Open Days and ask to view the social/communal spaces, see where you think you would be the most comfortable and hang out the most. Coming to the campus also helps you get a feel for the lay of the land!

While I am a part of Pendle, I do have friends from other colleges, so I don't personally think what college you join is too important. Although your first friends may be made in your flat, your long-term friends may end up being from other colleges. There are plenty of societies where you might find people you vibe with better. One thing that may be important to note, is that you graduate with those in your college. And, if you're unhappy with your choice of accommodation, you can always reach out to the accommodation manager and see if there's anything that could help.

Sorry I couldn't provide more definite answers, but I hope I helped at least a little! Do feel free to drop another message, or ask a current student on Unibuddy here!

My daughter was in a grizedale townhouse. (introverted, but wanted it because of covid and did not want a small flat in lockdown). She had the best time lol. She felt included and they had themed nights every week. It was a strange time back then, but as time went on and restrictions lifted, she made other friends and she often socialised at pendle bar. Grizedale bar is good, ive had a few drinks there over the time, especially their two for one woo woo. Pendle has the best laundry, but she often used pendles rather than Grizedales as it was bigger. Which ever college you are at you will have a fab time and you will make friends in your own college and other colleges. If you was to choose, think about the distance between college and department. Im guessing its the LEC with it being biology? Furness would be right on your doorstep, where as Pendle Grizedale is about 4-5 mins away, so it might feel separate from your 'home' and work life and you might appreciate that more.

Hi @ZebraShark
Congratulations on your MSci Biology offer! I was also part of pendle college during my undergraduate degree and really enjoyed my time there. The Pendle social areas are quite relaxed and currently consist of a vegan cafe, which turns into a bar at night and a common room with lots of games. I really enjoyed my 1st year living on campus as part of Pendle college (I lived in a shared bathroom flat for context), and attended lots of there events throughout the year including lots of live music nights and quizzes, and also got involved with their bar sports team playing pool and occasionally dominoes. There's lots to do within the college, with a range of events throughout the week ranging from craft nights to bar crawls, you can join your college sports team (football, netball or bar sports) and help run the college by being a part of the JCR.
Overall, I really like the college system at Lancaster, as it helped my to settle in quickly and gave me lots of opportunities to meet new people and make friends by attending lots of their events.
If you have any questions, feel free to ask!
