Query about switching from Cert to HE to BSc, and PT maintenance loan

Hi there,

I'm currently studying with UCLAN and enrolled on the Cert of HE in Astronomy, as you have to make progress in this before being allowed to enroll on the BSc (Hons) in Astronomy basically the Cert of HE will just be the beginning of the qualification.

With moving to Scotland, I'm applying as a continuing student, so the move hasn't affected anything in terms of living location, as I started study before I moved. However, I've just realised that I'll be switching to the BSc from the Cert of HE and wondered how will this affect my application, seeing as I'm now a resident of Scotland? I'll be a continuing student with the university, and both qualifications are technically part of the same complete qualification, as I'll be using the 120 credits at Level 4 to then switch to the BSc and start Level 5.

Also, I'm having issues with my doctor stamping the form for my disability to apply for the maintenance loan. He is perfectly happy in writing a letter detailing my illness, along with medication. However, he has said he doesn't personally know me well enough and cannot in good faith advise if I can or can not attend university in person, as that's not for him to decide, and he doesn't know me well enough. What should I do in this instance? I've seen from posts this is quite a common problem, so hopefully I can be guided in the right direction, as I find it absolutely shocking that I'm unable to get something as simple as a stamp on a form, when it's clear my disability poses a real issue.

Thanks for your help

Hi there,

Is your course classed as distance learning? Also, the form you have, is that the Medical Declaration Form?

Thanks, Graeme

Hi Graeme.

Thanks for your response.

Yes, it’s a distance learning degree. And it is also the medical declaration form which requires a stamp. However, for the reasons listed above, the doctor is only will to write a letter.

Thanks, first of all it's fine to move to other parts of the UK during a distance learning course, that's no problem.

I'm talking a look at the Medical Declaration Form now and I actually can't see anywhere that a stamp would go.

Just to confirm, does the form say at the top Medical Declaration - Part A To be flled in by the student?

Thanks, Graeme

Hi Graeme,

I’ll have to check when I get home, so let me get back to you about that. I do remember it’s something the doctor has to fill in.

In regards to the course, did you read the part about me changing the qualification from Certificate of HE to a BSc? So it’s effectively a different qualification, but it’s also the same as well, as the cert of he is the first year of the BSc. However, when I reapply, I will no longer be applying with my qualification down as cert of he, it will be the BSc when I fill in next time, so I don’t know how this works. If you could please advise?

I’ve just checked and it’s the medical declaration in which I fill in Part A, but the doctor fills out Part B.

and sorry, I thought there was a stamp for some reason. It’s Part B in which the doctor has an issue with, as per the reason in my original post

Hi there, We will be requiring the Medical Declaration Form to be completed, however this can be fully completed by the a qualified medical professional in the UK, it may not need to be your doctor, this could be a previous specialist etc. As for the change from HE to BSc, how many years of previous study do you currently have in total? (just the 1 year for the level 4?) Thank you, Stephen.

Hi Stephen,

It needs to be a doctor, as that’s been my only point of contact, and the only possible point of contact, as it’s them who provides me with prescriptions to manage it.

I’ve heard this problem is common and students have been able to sort it. If you could please advise?

In regard to the years studied, I have used 4 years out of 16 years study. So, I have 12 years study left. I’ve already checked all this, so this isn’t my query.

As previously explained: When I switch from the Certificate of HE to the BSc, I won’t be studying any more level 4 modules, as my next module will be a level 5 module. It’s more the fact that I’ve moved to Scotland since, and whilst continuing to study the Cert of HE hasn’t been a problem, as

I’ve also previously explained, I’m confused about if I’m eligible to apply for the BSc in Astronomy. As I’ve again previously mentioned, the Cert of HE is he first year of the BSc; however, they don’t let you enrol on the BSc until you’ve completed the Cert of HE. They’re both part of the same qualification, but when I apply on the SFE website, you’ve got to pick the qualification and confirm if you’re a new or continuing student.

This is where I’m confused, as if I was to start any other degree, I wouldn’t be eligible. But, as previously explained, this is a bit different.

If you could please advise?

Hi there, if you are studying a higher level than qualification already gained will be eligible to receive funding, this will not have an impact on your ability to study. You would apply as a continuing student due to the change in course for Open University courses. Thanks, Stephen

Thanks Stephen,

I just wasn’t sure, with it being under a new qualification name. It’s not the Open University btw just thought I’d add that.

So, what can I do in regard to the medical declaration? I hear my problem is a very common problem, but people seem to get around it with other evidence. What can you I do in this situation? It’s just extremely bad luck I have a doctor who is more than willing to write me a letter detailing my issues and medication, but he’s saying he isn’t qualified to verify if I can’t study at an actual university, as this isn’t for him to decide as he doesn’t live with me on a daily basis. As you can imagine, this is extremely frustrating, but it seems to be a very common issue, so was curious as to how others have managed to get around this. Like should I just get a letter from them and write my own covering letter?

Thanks again for your help.

Hi NovaeSci,

There is not another option, as the Medical Declaration form is the exception to the rule. Distance learning students are not eligible for the Maintenance Loan, unless that form is provided which confirms it is that the registered medical professionals opinion that the student cannot attend a course in person due to a disability that they have. That is the only thing that can be accepted for the exception to be considered.

Thanks, Clare
