Question - can insurance offer be declined after seeing results?

Hi

If I don’t make my higher firm offer and my insurance choice accepts me, after seeing my grades, can I choose to decline the insurance and go in to clearing? Or will my admission be blocked because the insurance choice has accepted me?

Please advise me on this.

Hi,

Yes, you can. It's called self-release and will be available on the UCAS Hub on results day. Please only do it if you're 100% sure you don't want to go to your insurance (but it does beg the question of why you couldn't pick another insurance choice that you'll be happy going to).

Of course, if you're released into clearing, you'll be at the mercy of whatever is available.

You do not have to have any Insurance choice if you dont want one - ie. why would you pick a Uni you dont actually want to go to as an Insurance? And as above - think very carefully before you dump an Insurance-to-Firm on Results Day.
Clearing is chaotic and very stressful. And you will be at the back of the queue for accommodation which can mean no accommodation. Its usually far better to just take a gap year, resit if necessary and apply to 5 new choices for 2026 entry.
Note that this option is only available once your firm choice has rejected you AND your insurance has made you unconditional. If either university is a bit slow at making decisions on results day then you’ll be delayed getting into clearing.

Better not to commit to an insurance that you don’t want to go to than risk delays
