my school has done me over with ucas, what can i do?

i sent my ucas off beginning of january but initially aimed to send it in november. i emailed my careers teacher, and any other necessary staff for help. i emailed nearly every week and never received a reply. i couldn’t find my careers teacher in person ever because she was always hidden away somewhere avoiding students asking for help. a form was sent out asking what predicted grades we needed so teachers know what to put. i take physics, computer science, and english and want to pursue a sociology degree. i needed ABB, and my last year mocks i got A in english, B in physics, and C in computer science. my ucas got sent off eventually because i gave up with asking for help from an unsupportive academy, and i found the careers teacher but upon approaching her politely i was met with nothing but a rude attitude. i applied to warwick, UoB, Leicester, nottingham, and aston, hoping to have warwick or UoB as my firm. i received an offer from aston. and today i have just received two rejections from warwick and UoB because my grades didn’t align with the criteria. i’m heartbroken and angry rightfully as my computer science teacher knows this year i’ve been working at a consistent B, also receiving a B in my latest mocks. however she’s gone and put a C, knowing i needed a B. yet when i attempted to discuss this with staff i never heard back or got a straight answer. i didn’t even know what my teachers put for predicted until after they sent off my application. considering my other two choices need ABB, this means i’ll get 1 offer and 4 rejections which hurts so bad. please anyone is there anything i can do because i’m so upset and disappointed with the lack of support i received.

If you get ABB take a gap year and reapply.

Firstly don’t assume that you will get 4 rejections. Different universities use predicted grades differently, some universities don’t use them at all.

Did Warwick and Birmingham both state explicitly that it was your predicted grades? If they just said grades then it might have been an issue with your GCSEs. If you haven’t already then ask for written feedback from both. Are there any similar courses with lower requirements at either university that you would be interested in?

i think it was a reason that was “your grades didn’t meet the requirements” or such. and the course i applied for was probably the course with the lowest requirements. my gcse grades were ranged from 6-9 so i don’t think that could’ve been the issue. i’m just very stuck. do you think it’d be good to look at apprenticeships as well now?

i’m not in the best position to take a gap year. considering i had also taken one before going into sixth form due to some issues

You might not like it, but is a second gap year a better option than attending a university you don't like? And paying c£50k while doing so? Life is a long game...

You have been let down by your college no doubt. Accept the offer you have (bird in the hand etc). You can sit your exams, hopefully get the ABB you are personally expecting to get and the apply to Warwick and UoB through clearing in August.

Unis are struggling so these top unis may well consider you - especially if you tell them you had applied to them in the first instance but had been rejected because of your predicted grades.

The process during clearing is that you keep the firm offer you have from uni xxx that you dont want to go to. Then on the day of the results you call up Warwick and B'ham and ask if they have any places. If they make you a verbal offer and ask for your UCAS number they will follow up with a written offer. You will have 48 hours to reject your firm offer and accept their offer. If they dont hear from you in writing via UCAS in 48 hours their offer is automatically rescinded.

If Warwick and B'ham are full then you have the fall back of taking (another) year out and applying next year.

Hope for clearing options or take a gap year; do not go somewhere you do not like.

This is so stupid. How do you not know your ucas predicted grades before and after applying . They should put it in a system like my school so I can see. Your saying you got a B in your AS level exams assuming end of years and got consistent Bs and predicted a C.

The best thing you should have done is get your parents involved I don’t understand why you got involved in such a huge matter. They listen to people who have more and respected authority from experience I’m saying .

The school prediction is confidential and based on their judgement of your maximum potential. See what offers you get and if you get the grades an opportunity will open up for you

UoB goes into clearing every year, not sure about Warwick, and UoB would probably take ABC in clearing, wonder if its got anything to do with the fact you don't do Sociology A-Level or if the system really is just set up to reject anyone below entry requirements.

I had a friend get rejected from Warwick a few years back because his GCSE maths grade wasn't a 6, despite having AAA predictions, but if your GCSEs were all 6-9 then it seems strange. Might be worth contacting the admission departments directly and asking again? Whats the worst that can happen, they say no?

Predicted grades are not “confidential”. You can’t make a judgement on where to apply without knowing your predicted grades (for certain). Your predicted grades are the foundation of your UCAS application as that is exactly what unis will base offers off.

Contact both universities in writing to request more feedback.

I doubt that you’ll find any degree apprenticeships in sociology. Plus with drop out rates at nearly 50% degree apprenticeships are a risky choice.

It isn’t.
Anyone can request a copy of their reference from UCAS. Data protection laws in the UK mean that you can request copies of any data about you.

Hi @catlover42069 ,

I'm sorry that this process has been difficult for you! Don't let this dishearten you as there is always another option.

I recommend emailing the universities to request feedback on why your application was unsuccessful. I also recommend contacting the head of your sixth form and explain you situation on how you believe there is a fault in your predicted grades and try to supply evidence (exam results, etc). I understand you have found it difficult to contact staff within your sixth form, so try emailing and in-person to meet with your head of sixth form. By doing this, you may be able to get your predicted grades adjusted, therefore you can contact the admissions for the universities and explain your situation and get your predicted grades amended.

If you are still struggling to get any support from your sixth form to do this, you could attempt to contact the university admissions team and explain how your situation and how you are performing at a higher level, ensuring to supply evidence. This isn't guaranteed to help, however if your determined to try then it's worth a go.

If amending your grade doesn't help, there are a couple more options:

1) Clearing - On results day, the clearing lines open and you can try to see if there are spaces on your desired course.

2) Gap year - I see you have stated your trying to avoid taking another gap year, however I believe this is a better option than attending a university you do not enjoy. You need to prioritise your happiness as being in a good mental position will help you will successfully completing your degree.

Overall do not let this situation dishearten you, focus on your exams as there are always other options if your sixth form is providing little to no support.

Good luck with your exams, please feel free to ask me any questions 😊,
-Sophia (Business and Management)

Is no one else finding it crazy that this school is asking students what predicted grades they want and (I guess apart from this student) giving them that? I know inflation of predicted grades happens in most schools but this seems ridiculous and unfair.

It's the reason unis view predictions with healthy scepticism, or disregard them completely.
