A few tips for saving money as a student

Saving money as a student can be a challenge, so it is best to make up a plan from the start for it to become a habit.
Here are a few tips for saving money:

1. Set a weekly and/or monthly budget
Create a spreadsheet or use a budgeting app as a good way to keep an eye on all of your regular or occasional expenses. Create different "savings pots" for specific expenses and goals.

2. Transportation methods
If you can, and if the distance allows you to, prioritise walking or cycling to your destination. If it adds 20-30 minutes to your journey, not only do you save money, but you also get a nice walk/cycle in your day.
If you do need to travel long distances and/or frequently, check out the student oyster photocard and railcard for 1/3 off travel expenses.

3. Food-budget
Another great way to save is to create a weekly budget for food, and prioritise cooking over ordering in/take out. Buying simple ingredients from the supermarket and meal prepping (batch cooking and storing in the freezer) for a few days will go a long way. For any take-outs, have a look at the TooGoodToGo app for end-of-the-day discounted meals near you. Look out for any other good deals, such as a student pantry.

4. Student discounts & loyalty cards
Many shops and supermarkets have discounts, so keep an eye on those (online or in-store). Make sure you get supermarket loyalty cards to gain points and offers for your next visit.

These are only a few ideas, so if you have any more, feel free to comment your top tips!
