Applied for BA Hons with Foundation Year

Hello, I applied for (BA Hons) Graphic Design with Foundation Year almost 2 weeks ago. I have a conditional offer and have been invited to a ‘selection event’ that is also being called an interview, it says that it will run from 9:00-17:00 on my scheduled date. Thought this was long for an interview or is it a day thing?

On UCAS, year of entry has now changed to ‘year 1’ and does not say foundation year anymore.

I am a mature applicant (27) and also a first time applicant who knows nothing about uni, I am learning through all of the processes of this application. I have an art btec and quite a bit of creative work experience as well as personal endeavours and passion projects which I mentioned in my personal statement. Are they possibly offering me a place straight onto first year Graphic Design? The foundation year is Art & Design. They have not mentioned a portfolio whatsoever.

Just looking for advise as I’m really confused and can’t find much about the arts online.

Thank you.

What are the conditions of the conditional offer you've received? (You can find the conditions in UCAS Hub.) As you have your BTEC in Art already, presumably the conditions don't mention any qualifications. However, the might say "conditional upon successful performance at selection event", "conditional upon production of appropriate portfolio", or something like that.

I suspect that most of the 9:00 - 17:00 selection event will be them trying to "sell" the course to you - showing your the facilities, work by current students, and that kind of thing. If there is a genuine "selection" element, it'll likely be relatively brief. This is a guess, by the way. At what uni is this?

You say that the year of entry has changed in UCAS. Has the course code also changed? (You can refer back to your welcome email from UCAS to check the code of the course to which you applied.)

I’m unsure what the code of the course means. Is that the numbers and letters in brackets? Like I say, I am totally new to it all. There seems to be lots of numbers and codes and so much information provided to me on emails, it’s seeming a bit overwhelming for me at the moment.

I have contacted the uni as I have now found the portfolio requirements and there was differences between foundation year and 1st year requirements.

I also have my open day a few weeks before my actual interview so that is definitely going to be helpful.

I have since found through UCAS when I select my offer it says my offer is counting on me being successful at the preparing for foundation year event, so thats now another name for this interview but year of entry still says 1st year.

Thank you for your reply. I am still none the wiser so I will have to contact the uni tomorrow if they don’t reply to my email

No worries. As a university sometimes offers multiple courses with similar names, they assign a four-character unique code to each course. That way, whenever you're referring to the course you can use the code to make absolutely sure you're referring to the right course - not a different course with a similar name.

Note that the same course offered by two different universities will often have the same code, but may not - so be careful. You can normally see the course code on the university web page for the course, and you can definitely see it on the UCAS page for the course. For example, if you search on the UCAS site for Graphic Design (with Foundation Year) at University of East London (here) and scroll down to the How to Apply section you find a series of codes, one of which is the four-character course code.

UCAS Course Code - Graphic Design (with Foundation Year) - University of East London.JPG

The reason I asked for the course code for which you'd applied was to make absolutely sure that you'd applied for the course you thought you had. However, if you don't know the code for the course, then that doesn't really help. Another place to find the course code is on the "welcome" e-mail you received from UCAS once you applied.

Did they confirm that that the offer you have received is for year 1 entry and not foundation year entry? Or have they not yet responses and you found the portfolio requirements elsewhere?

Agreed. Open days are often extremely useful.

That's confusing. If your offer is for year 1 entry, then the concept of a foundation year event makes no sense.

Understood. A phone call can often clear up this sort of confusion a lot faster than an e-mail can. Good luck!

I have a log in for an online portal for the uni I applied at. The interview info was on that portal with a link regarding portfolios which linked back to the official uni website.

I haven’t yet had a reply for the uni which is why I am going to call as I don’t really want to wait until my open day as it is still basically a month away or more.

I have 100% applied for the correct course with foundation year. Before they gave me the conditional offer, the year of entry said foundation year but then once I had the conditional offer the entry point changed to ‘1st year’

Hopefully the university should be able to clear my questions up for me. Thanks again for replying😊

some universities list the fy as year 1 of the course on UCAS if it's listed as a different course code to the version without the fy
