Game Art at Falmouth

Hi,
I’m doing Game Art at Falmouth. I started in October. I’m feeling really confused and bored. I have literally 1 tutorial a week and 1 lecture. So half a day a week. We were told we’d be up to 4 full days a week from January. But it’s still the same. So I’m just so bored and don’t understand. Is anyone else in the same position? Is anyone else doing Game Art at Falmouth?
Oh dear. That doesn’t sound right for a creative course :frown: especially if they said it would increase but it didn’t.

Do you have a course rep you can speak to? Did they recruit too many students/not have enough staff?

It might be worth looking into which universities accept applicants for year 2 of games art and put in a UCAS application to transfer. You can apply elsewhere without risking your current place but that would give you the option to move somewhere less remote and with more contact time.

Hi, I'm really sorry to hear you've had this experience. I agree with PQ, it sounds like they took on too many students or they had lecturer(s) leave and are trying to fill position(s). Have they given you any reason for why you have so little contact time? Do you have a lecturer you are supposed to be able to approach if you're having issues? (On my course this was called a 'personal tutor') It might be worth badgering lecturers to see if you can get access to the studios for longer hours or "sit in" on lectures for 2nd years... At least that's probably what I would've done 😅
Making promises they can't keep is a bad look.

I applied to Falmouth when I applied to Game Art a few years ago and got a very good impression of the course, so it's disappointing to hear.

As well as this I would seek out trying to get some mentoring - maybe from someone on your course in their 2nd or 3rd year that does work you like, or online on communities like ExperiencePoints. Having a "buddy" you can ask tech questions and get reviews from to improve your work would probably help you with feeling motivated.

Hi,
Im currently having trouble deciding between Falmouth and another uni (Staffordshire). I’m really sorry you’re experiencing this and it is definitely not normal to be having only one lecture and tutorial a week especially when they have said it would be different. I’m already dubious about Falmouth as it is quite far away, expensive and I have heard people say before that they felt while studying at Falmouth that they were left to their own devices and not offered much support (though to be fair they did not specifying which course they studied).

I’d really like to know if this is still an ongoing issue or if it ended up resolving itself as well as if you would recommend Falmouth still as a place to study Game art. If you feel that Falmouth is not worth it please let me know!

Hey, I'm a current student at University of Staffordshire and I have close friends within Games Art who rant and rave about how good the course has been for them and how accommodating it's been for extended circumstances (and it's also a lot cheaper around here lol).

Honestly cannot recommend the university enough as a current student but obviously it's your decision at the end of the day, so I'm just here if you have any further questions about the course or just general life itself at Staffordshire

Thank you,
