The Student Room Group

My hobby is wandering around forests and cemeteries past midnight and sleeping there.

I really enjoy going into forests in the pitch black at like 2am and wandering around exploring. The reason I do it is because there's something really comforting about being completely alone in the dead of night. Nobody is watching you and nobody knows you are there.

The darkness offers you natural protection from the eyes that would otherwise spot you. I don't use a flashlight so I'm totally hidden, I just navigate using the little bit of light the moon provides. Then after walking deep into the forest I'll find somewhere that looks good and I will lay down my mat and sleeping bag and sleep until morning, then leave and go home.

I've been doing it for a while now and I've never seen anyone, as you might expect. I hear animals and stuff but they're no concern to me.

Here's 2 pictures of my recent sleeps, one in a forest and one in a cemetery. So relaxing and I felt like I was invincible, completely safe.

Sorry the images are a bit dark.

I've been woken once or twice by a fox that had come to investigate but other than that. I've probably had some creatures approach when but they've not made enough sound to wake me I'm guessing.

No offence but don’t you care about your personal welfare or safety?

Not really, I'm essentially invisible. In a forest at night with no light being emitted from you, you can't see more than about 3 metres in front of you. So the chances of someone spotting you is very very low.

I loved Civ 5 so will probably give Civ 6 a try but I'm currently playing Baldur's Gate 3, after I'm done with that I'm going to play Alan Wake 2.

This was a very interesting thing I talked about. I'll just put it out here for me that my joy is not always in my freewill

There's something magical about being at one with nature.

Have you thought about investing in a pair of night vision goggles?
And a tripod for your camera?

You may well be even safer when you do this than sleeping at home. Nobody breaks into a forest nor a graveyard to nick stuff.

Would you like to get into foraging from the forest? For delicious healthy free ingredients for your meals.

I've never thought about getting a pair of night vision goggles but consider it.

Nah I'm not really into the whole foraging or vlogging aspect of it. It's too dark to record anything anyway. I've seen Youtuber who venture out into "haunted" forests at night but it's usually fake drama where they'll hear a noise and freak out or pretend to hear someone screaming or see someone in the bushes etc.

I've dabbled a bit with night-time photography. 30 second or 2 minute exposures. Or ISO's pushed to the limit. There's something special about well taken night-time photos.

I'm more of a daytime forest person. When it's easier to spot edible plants. And to walk without tripping or stumbling into stuff. Although I can fully understand your night-time attraction to them.

For cemeteries I'm similar to you, I prefer them at night. For the peace. As a place to contemplate...

Sounds fun, other than sleeping outside in the cold on hard ground.

It's not cold when you have a good sleeping bag and I have an air pad that keeps me off the ground and underneath that I have a foam mat to keep dampness off my pad.

I get cold sleeping in my house in the winter, there is no way I could deal with sleeping outside haha. Glad your setup is working for you though and it does sound like a lot of fun 🙂
