University of Sheffield English Literature Student - Ask Me Anything !

Hi everyone,

I'm Phoebe and this is my 'Ask Me Anything' post. I'm looking forward to answering any questions you may have!

I am in the first year of my PhD in English Literature and my research is focused on contemporary world cinema (yes, you can study films on the English Literature course at Sheffield!). Previously, I did my BA and MA in English Literature also at the University of Sheffield so I have plenty of experience and tips to share.

I have been in involved in various societies, including EngSoc (the English Course specific society), as well as the Stitch Society where I was the treasurer on the committee (which basically means I was in charge of ordering nice new materials for us to use!)

At undergraduate, I lived in Endcliffe accommodation. Then at MA, I lived in Gleadless, Sheffield and got the tram to campus. Now, I live in the Peak District (in an area where climbing is very popular!) and I either drive or get the bus in a couple of days a week. So if you have any questions about great places to explore in the Peak District, I'd love to share some of my favourite walks and views (also the café at Derwent Reservoir does an amazing jacket potato!)

Please feel free to ask me any questions that spring to mind. Whether its about accommodation, Student Life in Sheffield, applying for BA, MA or PHD study, or about the subject English Literature (or any other Arts and Humanities subjects). Equally, I'm happy to answer questions about great places to get your coffee on and around campus, great movies to watch and where to see them in Sheffield (such as the Film Unit Cinema inside the Students Union!), and MUST-see places in the Peaks. :h:

I'll be online on Fridays, so will respond as soon as I can. Or if you want to get in touch sooner, you can find myself (and lots of other helpful students) on The Ambassador Platform here.

I look forward to hearing from you!

Hello, I'm on a year out so my place at Sheffield for 2025 is already confirmed, but I'm a little lost on getting accommodation. I want to stay at Endcliffe (preferably studio flat), so where should I look to get the place? I'm also realising that maybe I'm not supposed to get the accomodation through the university, as I had originally thought.

Also, since you stayed at Endcliffe, are there any places that are preferable, or does it not really matter?

Hi Ubelgiji, 👋

It's great to hear you are already confirmed to start with us this year, welcome! What course are you going to be doing? 😃

The applications for student accommodation should be opening this month so keep an eye out on the webpages for accommodation! Also, if you already have a place confirmed then you may have made an account on the Sheffield website (it might be called Applicant Muse for you). If so, on there, there is usually a link to book your accommodation when it opens up. 😃

Here is the link for the webpage where you can view what accommodation is like at Endcliffe and Ranmoor. Endcliffe is great, it has great facilities at the Edge (a student hub with working spaces and a bar). 🎶

Also if you press on this this link, you'll be able to view the virtual tours of the accommodation. In particular, if you are looking for a studio, then you should look at the virtual tour of the Laddow Studios which look really cool! 🏡

In terms of which are preferable, all of the student accommodation at Endcliffe is great from my experience. It's all really conveniently located near local shops, cafes and the Botanical Gardens. So yeah the best thing is to think about what type of room/flat you want and what your budget is. But all of them are in great locations! 😄

Let me know if you think of any other questions! 👋

All the best,
Phoebe 🙂

Hi Phoebe,

Thank you so much for the insight. I hadn't realised that accomodation wasn't available yet so thank you for the clear up. I've also been told that studio flat is not the same as ensuite and that I've been confusing everyone by saying studio when I meant ensuite, my bad.

I'm going to study law, which I'm really excited about. Right now I'm staying in Brussels by the Parliament of the European Union and its so interesting to see how international law is done over here.

I've just logged into Applicant Muse, thank you for telling me about that, so I'll be checking that for updates.

Thank you so much!

Hey Ubelgiji, 👋

It's no problem. I'm happy to help! And that makes sense, yes ensuite means you will get a private bathroom in your room, whereas studio is a small flat all to yourself. But it's an easy mistake to make, don't worry. 😀

I've heard that the School of Law at the University of Sheffield is really great so I'm sure you will really enjoy your course. Living in Brussels sounds great; you'll have some great experiences and insights to bring to Sheffield I'm sure! 😄

I'm glad you are able to log into Muse now and yes, do check on it for updates about accommodation applications. 🏡

Please let me know if you have any other questions about studying at the University of Sheffield, or about Sheffield in general! 🌳

All best wishes,
Phoebe 🙋*♀️

What is the population of Silecroft?
Have accommodation applications opened yet? I saw on the website that it opens in March, but I haven't had an email about it x
