Hi @ilovespareribs!
Firstly congratulations on your offers for all 3 universities! 😁

My names Matt and I am studying in my first year at LJMU. I would say Liverpool is an amazing city for a good social life. There are endless opportunities and so much going on all the time. There are specific student nights on at clubs and bars every night so there is a lot to choose from and LJMU offer over 130 sports and societies to pick from ranging from subject societies to even a Taylor Swift society! So there really is something for everyone. Using this link provided you can find out about all the sports teams and societies offered by LJMU! https://www.jmsu.co.uk/groups?group_type=societies-991&group_cat=&search=. Liverpool has always been rated as one of the best city's for students and I can see why, having been there since September!

LJMU offers 3 libraries so you will be spoilt for choice! These include the Aldham Roberts library, Avril Roberts Library, and the student life building which offers a digital library and is open 24/7. Each library is located within walking distance of all accommodation and all University buildings so they are very easy to access! All the staff are super helpful and friendly and can assist with anything you need. The libraries also include private study areas and you can even book out small rooms to practice presentations, group work, or even to just have complete silence to focus on your studies. You can find out everything you need to know about the 3 libraries with pictures and locations using this link, https://www.ljmu.ac.uk/library/visiting/facilities.

I hope this has answered your question, please do not hesitate to get in touch with anymore questions you might have!
Thanks, Matt ☺️

I would say uni of liverpool would be your best bet. Liverpool is an amazing city for students and (I don't know about university owned libraries but) the city library is big and gorgeous, a lovely place to study. Uni of also has a higher reputation than LJMU for future employment. Sheffield is obviously a good university and I don't personally know much about the city life there but from my point of view liverpool is a great place to study.

go to sheffield its much better especially for eng than liverpool and ljmu. obvs if u dont like sheffield then don't go there, but i can't see much reason for turning it down when it has a much better reputation than the other 2 unis, especially for engineering as i said which will help with career opportunites, etc in the future.

By far Uni of Sheffield is way better in terms of teaching, and reputation, but it’s all up to personal preference at the end of the day.

Hi ilovespareribs,
Congratulations on your offers, all of these are great universities! 🙂

When I was picking which university to go to I found it useful to list the pros and cons of each one. For example, I really liked the friendly feel on campus at Sheffield and how close it was to the Peak District.

In terms of social things to do, we have an award-winning students union which has over 300 societies and sports clubs for you to join. This is a great way for you to meet people with similar interests to you and there really is something for everyone. In addition to this, there is plenty to do around Sheffield including shops and cafes.

There's lots of good study spaces for engineering students at Sheffield including the Engineering Heartspace and the Diamond. I particularly like studying in the Diamond due to the interesting architecture. You can read more about the Faculty of Engineering's facilities here: https://www.sheffield.ac.uk/engineering/diamond-engineering/our-facilities

I hope this helped,

What’s societies actually? Like how do u join n do what

Hi ilovespareribs, 👋

Are there any particular hobbies, sports, or activities you are interested in? Likelihood is we have a society for it! 😄

We have so many societies to choose from, including subject specific societies. For instance, I was a part of EngSoc at undergraduate level which was a society for school of English students, and they organised social events like quiz or club nights or end of year socials. There is one for Civil Engineering too, you can view their page and learn what they do and how to join here! Subject societies, including this one also often have social media pages so you check out past events and what they have been up to. 👏

There are also lots of creative activity societies, including dance, ceramics, book socities, cooking, creative writing, filmmaking, music etc. I was part of the Stitch Society and became a treasurer on the committee during my undergraduate. This was a great opportunity to meet other people and learn new skills and hobbies like crochet, embroidery, cross-stich and using sewing machines. 🧵🪡

There's also societies based on sports, faith, wellbeing, fundraising, food/drink, sustainability, campaigning, cultural/national, and performance. If you want to view the full list, you can have a look and search by key term here. 🎶🏀🎮️

Throughout the year, societies also hold one of sessions you can attend called Give it a Go's (GIAG). This way you can trial a society without committing to joining fully, to see if you are interested in this particular activity. For more info on our Give it a Go sessions, you can press here.

Finally, if you still can't find a society that's right for you (but honestly there were so many I wanted to join all at once!) you can even start your own society! You can read about this on the Student's Union Website too! 😀

If you have any more questions about societies or about studying in Sheffield in general, don't hesitate to let me know! 😀

All best wishes,
Phoebe
