king’s maths school? (kclms)

hi everyone, I got a conditional offer at kclms and I’m currently debating on whether to go, or stay at my current school. tbh I didn’t expect an offer lol as I thought the interview hadn’t gone well, but I’m hesitant as I’m not sure if I want to pursue maths at uni and going to kclms kinda limits my options.

also to anyone who has studied or is at kclms rn, how is the school? I thought the school was pretty small and when I went to the taster the teachers were kind of dismissive in general.

any advice would be helpful!

hi, personally I've decided not to go as whilst I do want to do maths & business in the future, I know I'd hate physics A-level and the other subject options are very limited. When I visited it felt a little bit soulless, and whilst I know the school is amazing and gets very good exam results, I'm honestly not sure if that's because the teachers are amazing or if it's just that the people who go there are very high achieving and learn all the subjects themselves... sorry that's a bit negative but that was my impression, good luck choosing where to go
Teachers aren't all that good for such a highly regarded school. If your current school is good then it's not really worth the effort.

And especially if you aren't 100% set on maths, you shouldn't force yourself to attend such a maths oriented school

thanks for the reply! same lol, when I visited for the interview the campus kinda threw me off, and I def agree with what you said, the students they take in are already high achieving and I don’t know how much of that reflects on the teaching. thanks again!

thank you for the reply! may I ask if you’re a students at kclms? my current school is more specialized in humanities and less on STEM, where kclms is clearly the opposite. do you know how the teaching style is, as on the taster day it was mostly discussion-styled, thanks!

Im not a current student, but one of my friends goes there and they complain a fair bit about the teachers. I'd have to ask about the teaching style

hey there, I got a conditional offer for kclms this year as-well and I am the same situation as you!
I don't know whether I should leave my school because I have good relationships with my current teachers and they all are very helpful, even though it is a given that kclms have great results.

I have a friend's friend who currently is in y12 and he says that the teachers are "genuinely happy to help" and the "community is the best part". So in my perspective it will be quite a welcoming school in general. Right now, I have a good impression of the teachers- which is not saying much since I really only got to talk to 2 of them in the interviews but they seemed very relaxed and informative.

I recently received an email about the horizons program where they invite us to the school for sessions before the start to "get the feel" of the school, so I am definitely looking forward to that. Currently, I am leaning towards going to kclms because as it was already in my mind to be my first option when I applied.

so glad to find someone in the same boat as me! I’ve also heard lots of good things about kclms but also a few bad ones, and one of the things throwing me off is the size of the campus as well..

and I definitely agree with what you said, although kclms has really good results I do like my current school and teachers and I don’t really want to throw that away, and I won’t know anyone at kclms asw

I’m going to horizons as well and I hope that can help both of us make a decision!! (though the dates are so close to exams 🤥)

For 2024 A level results, Kings had the joint 5th highest progress score in the country for 16-18 year olds out of 4500 schools.

This suggests that even if they have very high achieving students arriving at 16YO, the school must be doing something right for students to be progressing well above the average expected level, taking into account their already high level when starting at the school.

Liverpool Maths School is also in the top 10 schools in the country for the same measure.
