History and French at Uni Supercurriculars

I’m interested in studying History and French at university and am wondering what supercurriculars would be best for my application
I'm currently studying History, French, Religious Studies and English Literature at AS Level, and will most likely drop English next year for A Level.
I would really appreciate any help ))
In general, essay competitions may be something to explore. That said you don't need to do anything more than wider reading necessarily.

It may be quite relevant for you to explore some French history and literature (particularly in the original language if possible) beyond what is covered in the A-level syllabuses

Translation competitions can be a good niche?
I think start by making lists of interests and seeing where the strands cross- I like french lit and find historical context/ literary theory cool! As well as like the historical development of the french language and then creole and then colonialism!

Hey,

For French, reading books and watching shows in French is an easy yet good supercurricular.

When it comes to history, I would recommend visiting museums and historical sites and keeping a journal of your visits. So if you went to the Natural History Museum you would maybe include a photo and describe an exhibition you enjoyed. I would again, recommend you read books and watch shows about historical events (if you can read books/watch shows about historical events in French that would be even better). I'd also recommend volunteering at a museum at the weekends/during the school holidays.

Another thing is writing competitions. I'm not sure if there are writing competitions for those learning French, but there will definitely be writing competitions for history.

If you can afford a Eurostar to Paris, visit Musée de Cluny, Versailles, and Malmaison, and write about this in your personal statement.

Hey!

For the French side, as others have said, essay writing competitions are great. There are some translation competitions like the Anthea Bell Translation Prize and the Stephen Spender Prize that would be really good to get involved in, and there’s also the UK Linguistics Olympiad but you’d need to check the dates/deadlines for that. One thing that really helped me was an online French literature course I took with LinguaTute. The course taught us about French literature and history starting from the 16th century and ending with modern French authors. I found this really useful to get a broader view of the history of French literature and writing, and also to learn about French history itself! I think they’re running it again this year so definitely worth looking into!

Hope that helps

I got 5 offers for French and I mentioned I'd read l'étranger by Camus and I found a YouTube video of Molière's Tartuffe but you could definitely go for something more modern if that's what you're interested in. Good luck!
