teacher work experience

i am a first year uni student interested in doing a pgce in the future in primary or secondary (haven’t quite decided yet!). if secondary i would be teaching geography.

what is some good experience i can get that would set me apart from other candidates? i’m looking to teach in a private school in the future so would love to do both a PGCE and an MA.

i can easily get school work experience, but just wondering for other experience ideas outside of generic school experience.

any ideas would be appreciated!

-> You could do volunteering, there is some virtual work experience you could try on springpod - like charity and a teaching one?

I think a good idea is to hone key skills that are ideal in teaching i.e interpersonal communication - so whilst looking for work experience any job incooparates that so you can link that on how it will better suit you for the role if that makes sense?

Best of luck,
Trickia

I would definitely get some experience of a private setting. It sounds glamourous but from what I hear is a challenging sector now the government have added VAT. You also have a personal contract and less support from your union and the fact private schools don't have to hire qualified teachers means you may get paid significantly less than in the state sector. Go in eyes wide open!

A quick google will find the get into teaching website and how to get experience.

Good luck!

Hi @Anonymous

You could try to get a job working at a summer school. This would likely be an interesting experience and help you to develop lots of skills.

Another option would be to work / volunteer at a kids club or group. For example, a sports club for a sport that you enjoy.

Hope that helps!
