Maths at uni without FM?

I'm planning on changing the course I applied to from history & economics to mathematics & economics but I do not study further maths currently. I'm looking to get an A* in maths though and the unis requirement for both those degrees are AAA . I got an offer from them to study history & economics but want to switch the history for maths .

Will I be able to since I don't study fm? Will it put me at a disadvantage? It's not necessarily on the requirements. And what if I were to do maths and stats instead? Or shall I just stick to considering maths and economics?

If it's not listed as required or preferred you should be ok. It also depends which uni you're applying to tho, as you might struggle on a maths degree w/o fm even if you do get accepted.

I was in a similar situation where I wasn't sure whether to do MORSE or pure econ. I asked at the open day about doing MORSE w/o fm and they said I would likely struggle since they don't teach it from scratch and assume everyone knows the fm content already (this was warwick uni) so I ended up applying for econ. I'd advise you to check this with the unis you're applying to (some teach fm stuff you need from scratch, some just review it quickly in a few weeks)

Maths+Stats would prob be more difficult, it might be worth learning some fm content in the summer of y13 if you decide to choose it.

Thanks, this is for York. I have emailed them to see if they even allow course changes , just waiting for a response. But yeah teaching myself some further pure should be fine. And I think I'll keep it as maths and econ

Hi @Fxrzana,

This is something that varies from university to university. For the most part, if the grade requirements do not include further maths, any content learnt in further maths that is required for you course will either be introduced to you during your lectures or included as added resources. If you are going to a n offer holder day in the next few months, it may be worth asking so you are prepared. Whether you are taught the content or asked to read up on it yourself, there should only be a few areas that you will end up needing to learn.

Hope this helps and good luck with the switch
