Buying a laptop

I have an offer for Cambridge CS (undergrad) and would like to buy a laptop / computer. Are there any discounts at Cambridge?

Mine is quite old and laggy already unfortunately 😭 so should I buy one now? Or is it cheaper to wait until October to do so?

Thanks a lot in advance!

Hi there,

I'm not sure if Cambridge University themselves have offers so I can't help with that I'm afraid. Could check their bursary and/or grants?

Maybe check for student discounts like uni days or similar platforms? (That's an app)
I would recommend looking and browsing at your options now (I can't advise about the time that is the best) on places like Currys, Acer etc to get a better scope and actually get something that is worth it. Sometimes eBay has good ones

Good luck and well done on your offer xx

I'd hold off buying something directly until you have more details. There are certainly education discounts that ramp up in September / October for windows type laptops and for Macintosh laptops.

For Compsci, I believe the current recommendation is a machine with at least one bootable partition with a Linux system (e.g. Ubuntu) on it. That could be either a MacBook or a Windows type machine. They don't list specs but suggest that it should be in the £800 price range. Given that modern apple machines use ARM chips, you may find they could be a bit problematic running certain software in Linux, although support is improving.

As far as I am aware, most colleges do not directly support these purchases. If your laptop were stolen or similar, you may be able to engage hardship support to assist in getting a replacement.

And congrats on your Offer!
