Dear all,
I am due to complete my BSc Nursing degree in September. Early on in my studies I realised that my passion lies more in medicine than nursing. However, after many discussions with doctors, university lecturers, and the Warwick Medical School admissions team, I decided to complete my degree while gaining as much experience and knowledge as possible to support my future career.
I plan to work as an ED nurse for a year to build experience, having previously worked as a HCA in ED for four years where I developed a passion for emergency medicine. Additionally, I volunteer in community health clinics in Nepal, delivering healthcare to remote villages—an experience that has reinforced my desire to pursue medicine, as I believe I could contribute even more as a doctor.
My main concern is financing my studies, as the maintenance loan will be minimal. I am interested to hear from anyone who has entered medicine through the GEM route and have been able to work shifts as a nurse while studying medicine. I am no stranger to hard work, but I want to understand if balancing both is feasible.
Any insights or advice would be greatly appreciated!
Many thanks,
Maria
