Biomedical Science which university to choose?

Hello,
My daughter is applying to Biomed programs and we are looking for some guidance or feedback.
We are from the USA and trying to navigate the differences and pathways between different courses.
First, she is interested in getting IBMS /HCPC accredited. From what we understand that will give her the best potential for employment in the UK or in labs elsewhere after graduation. Ideally she would also like to stay and do a Masters in UK.

Here are her CONDITIONAL offers:
Brighton, Kent and Essex
UNCONDITIONAL: Cardiff Met, Middlesex, Greenwich and South Wales, London Met and Westminster.

She was able to apply directly to some of these Universities and went thru UCAS for others. This is the tricky part for us now, is figuring out how to respond.
The conditional schools are her top choices, but they all require the same results from an end of year exam, which she'll get results July 5th from. Brighton is currently her #1 and is in UCAS. She's thinking if putting Cardiff Met as insurance pick as it is also in UCAS.
Kent and Essex were bother direct applications, so not sure how to have them still be options?
The US system is just very different with offers mostly bc of cost (they start bargaining price to get students in, kinda like a used car salesman) and most offers are firm once given based on what grades you have gotten up until applying, you only need to get your diploma. We are trying to figure out what options she has.
We would love any feedback on the universities listed or advice with navigating offers.
Thanks!

Hello there,

I hope you are well!

We are happy to hear that your daughter is thinking of making Cardiff Met as the insurance choice on UCAS! The BSc (Hons) Biomedical Science degree at Cardiff Met is professionally accredited by the Institute of Biomedical Science and the Royal Society of Biology. The accreditations will help her to secure a job or a masters degree in the future as well.

Once she receives the final results, please email the certificate to [email protected] and then we will update her offer. Please send the conditions to the email above before 15th August 2025: Practical Information Important Dates.

Please note that she can only make a firm choice and an insurance choice on UCAS, and she will have to decline the other offers on UCAS.

Cardiff Met is located in Cardiff, a small and vibrant capital city of Wales. We have two campuses in Cardiff. The Biomedical Science course will take place in LLandaff campus which is about 30 minutes bus ride from the city centre. The other campus is Cyncoed where the sport facilities located. She can travel easily between campuses, student halls and city centre.

If you have any questions about the US requirements, you can always contact our regional manager on [email protected].

Should you have any general enquiries, please drop us an email on [email protected].

Hello @EUmba 👋

It is brilliant that your daughter is wanting to study Biomedical Science and holds a conditional offer with us - congratulations! 😊

Studying BSc Biomedical Science at the University of Essex is a great choice. Our course is accredited by the Institute of Biomedical Science (IBMS) and approved by the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC), we are the top university in the country for providing NHS placements, and we are ranked 2nd in the UK for biosciences (The Mail University Guide 2025). 🧬🔬

The University of Essex is just outside of Colchester, less than one hour away from London on the train (with three stations near to campus). Our Students' Union is amazing (top 10 in the UK), with over 165 societies to join, a library (open 24/7), gym and sports centre (free if you live on campus), cinema, two bars and a nightclub on campus. Students are supported by the Student Wellbeing and Inclusivity Service and we are now ranked 29th in the British Universities and Colleges Sport table. 🌟

We have a range of Masters courses if you want to continue studying at the University of Essex with the Alumni Loyalty Discount. Regarding applications, UCAS and direct applications are completely separate so any choices you make with one shouldn't have an impact on the other. 🎓️

Have a look at all of your options together and choose what feels right for her. I hope this helps, please let us know if you have any more questions, and good luck! 🍀💫

The Conditional offers are by far the better Unis and in interesting locations - Brighton in particular.
Definitely don't go for South Wales, London Met or Westminster - no reputation for anything and certainly not for sciences.

Hi,
I hope you are well!😊

It's great to see that you are looking to study here at Kent, and congratulations on your conditional offer😊
I understand that the applications process is a little bit different and difficult to navigate for International Students, so I have brushed up on the process to help you!🤭

Kent has a dedicated page for Students applying from the US. The page, including information about the application process, fees, funding, and English Language requirements etc can be found here.
You can also get in touch with Kent's friendly admissions team at [email protected].

I've spoken to admissions about your specific situation and they have said- 'Because you have applied directly to the University of Kent, you are not bound by all of the UCAS processes, and their deadlines. However, if you are looking to study here at Kent, the university has suggested that you Firmly accept the Conditional Offer sooner rather than later as you cannot start the CAS process for visas etc before you have accepted the Unconditional Firm offer. Once you have accepted the Conditional Offer the university will register you as placed with Kent on UCAS. However, this then means you cannot accept another university as your firm'.

I hope this helps! Do let me know if anything is unclear, or if you need any other information, email our friendly team at [email protected].

Here's just a few things why you should choose Biomedical Science at Kent:

Students working in the labs get to engage with PhD students, who may be working in the lab, and who are on hand to help too! This gives students a great insight into what Postgrad study is like and fosters a sense of support and community. Find out more about Biomedical Postgraduate study at Kent here.

The School of Biomedical Sciences is renowned for its exciting and internationally recognised research, with academics specialising in various fields.

Students have the chance to take a Year Abroad, or a Year in Industry. Find out more about Julia's placement in the NHS here.

Graduates have gone on to study at Postgraduate level, and have gone to work in research-based jobs in academic, government, industrial and medical labs, as well as teaching, and IT to name a few careers!

Hi @EUmba

We're really pleased to see Brighton is your Daughters number one choice University 😊

We hope we get to meet her in September! In the meantime, she should have been invited to join our Unibuddy Community where she can meet fellow offer holders on her course and others at Brighton for 2025 entry, and get the opportunity to speak to current students with any questions she might have.

Our Biomedical Science BSc(Hons) course is accredited by the Institute of Biomedical Science (IBMS) and the Royal Society of Biology (RSB).

On completion of our course students will have the skills and knowledge for careers in industries such as biotechnology, pharmaceutical development and forensic science. You will also be prepared for postgraduate study, academic research and teaching.

Student on our course get to learn with internationally recognised researchers who are part of the research Centre for Regenerative Medicine and Devices and Centre for Lifelong Health.

We offer specialist facilities such as atomic force microscopes, microbiology lab, molecular biology lab, and genomics/ proteomics facility for analysis of cell genes and proteins.

Student who achieve the required standard in year 2 can choose to progress from BSc directly to the third year of the Biomedical Science MSci and study towards a masters-level qualification.

We have opportunities for further postgraduate study in the following fields, all of which can be a springboard to PhD level:

We also offer an Alumni Scholarship for students who continue to study with us for their Masters qualification 😊

In regards to making the firm and insurance choices, this should be available to do via UCAS once all university decisions have been made. For direct applications they do not follow the UCAS rules and date restrictions. However, you can only make one University your firm choice and one University your Insurance choice.

I hope this is helpful!

Please let me know if you have any questions. You can also call us on +44 (0)1273 644644 or send us a message via our online enquiries form

All the best with the decisions!
