Part-time jobs at university

Hi there,

🎓 When it comes to university life, many students wonder about the benefits and challenges of taking on part-time work alongside their studies. Let's explore how combining work and education can be a rewarding experience! Many student jobs come with flexible contracts, allowing students to choose when to work, making it easier to balance with studies while earning money. Students can often find positions that work perfectly around their lectures and assignments.

📚 The block teaching at our university works great for managing work. We have focused teaching periods followed by breaks, which makes planning work shifts much easier. This means I can concentrate on my studies during blocks, and pick up more work hours during breaks!

💰 Besides the money (which is great for covering living costs and some travel!), working part-time has made my university experience so much better. Most importantly, I'm developing valuable skills like communication, time management, and professional behavior - perfect for my future career in cyber security!

📝 Experience on your CV is super important when you're looking for graduate jobs. Employers love to see that you have practical skills and work experience alongside your degree. Part-time work shows them you can handle responsibility, work professionally, and juggle multiple commitments.

🌟 Even if your job isn't related to what you're studying, it still shows important workplace skills. Employers really value experience with customers, teamwork, handling difficult situations, and being reliable. These people skills, combined with your degree knowledge, make you stand out!

🎯 Part-time work also gives you great examples to talk about in job interviews. When employers ask about teamwork, solving problems, or handling pressure, you can share real experiences instead of just talking about coursework.

⚖️ Balancing work, study, and life seemed challenging at first, but I've found ways to make it work. I use a digital calendar to organise my study time, work shifts, and free time. I'm realistic about what I can do and always communicate clearly with my employer about when I'm available, especially during exam times.

💡 If you're thinking about getting a part-time job, look for flexible positions with employers who understand student life. University jobs, like my ambassador role, are perfect because they're designed to work around your studies. This experience has taught me so much about managing my time and being professional, while helping build an impressive CV for my future career! 🚀

Hi

I totally agree with the points here about part-time working whilst at University. There definitely are some challenges around doing it, as it can be difficult sometimes to manage workloads and still keep working.

Hi there,

The points made here are great! It's good to work while at uni as it can really help out financially, but it can be tricky to balance sometimes.

I always recommend working for uni as campus jobs tend to be quite flexible which is good for fitting around your studies. They are usually quite good with wanting you to put uni first which is nice too.

Or, I always recommend jobs such as bar/restaurant jobs that tend to be evening/weekend work as this fits well around uni work too!

I hope some of this helps,

Lucy -SHU student ambassador 🙂
