Tips for Smashing Asignments

Top 3 tips for smashing assignments:

Hi there ,

As it is quite a busy assignment period now, we thought we would give a few tips on how to best tackle your assignments.

1. Follow the assignment brief that you are given - this may sound silly, but sometimes students will go off on a tangent away from the assignment brief that has been set. By sticking to it and going into detail based on it, you are more likely to get a better mark.

2. Use your word count wisely - Most university assignments will have a capped work count set for each assignment you mustn't go over this, as markers of your assignment are allowed to stop reading/marking your work beyond that point.

3. Finally, reach out for help if you are stuck - Your lecturers will want you to pass your assignments. So seek support if you are struggling. Here at Wrexham, we offer study skills support sessions, check your university campus to see if they offer something similar.

I hope these tips help,

Hi,

Some great tips here. I'd also like to add that it's a good idea to get started on your assigments early - even if you don't plan to write the full assignment for some time, gathering sources, quotes and ideas early on can be a great way to set yourself up for success closer to the assignment deadline. I also like to have a document recording all the sources I've used as I go rather than just adding them into the bibliography at the end; this way, I'm much less prone to forgetting which resources I've accessed and my citations are much more exhaustive. 🙂

Hope this helps,
Eve (Kingston Rep).
Another referencing tip

Get the hang of referencing in whichever style your uni uses. If you're struggling with referencing, read up on it, ask for help, whatever it takes, but reference properly because "I've seen plenty of people lose marks for failing to reference, or for referencing incorrectly" (PinkMobilePhone, 2025)

This is a great idea!

I thought I could add my three tips on how to get the best mark you can too!

Ask questions as soon as you think of them, rather than leaving it until the last minute. If you have a question, ask your tutor straight away, either in class or over email. They will be happy to help and it means you are sure on everything before you start to write the assignment!

Take every opportunity for formative feedback. IF there is a chance to submit some work for feedback, or go to a drop in session etc, take it as this is the best way to get feedback on your work so you can do as well as you possibly can!

Make the most of all of the university resources. At Hallam, the library often puts different events on where they help you with referencing, critical writing, structure etc so if yours does this too make sure you take advantage of this and go to it! It will help you.

I hope some of these help 🙂
