I ordered food from justeat 4 times this week. i know it’s too much but i usually try and buy from a place that does rice and beans/chicken etc instead of burgers and chips and stuff. it’s still really unhealthy i know but i don’t cook in my shared kitchen because my roommates will have pres on tuesdays and don’t clean up for the rest of the week. i also just don’t like to be in the kitchen at all because some of them have been pretty disrespectful towards me so i try and avoid them. because of this i can’t use the fridge and oven and hob. sometimes i get food like meal deals from my local tesco but i feel like the workers think im weird if i go in there everyday.
Once is too much in my book, I dread to think what your bill is for the week. Always do proper shops and cook healthy meals, perhaps you should look for another room.

Hello Anonymous #1,
I would say that it depends on your budget, your personal health and how much money you're spending on said food.
I partially echo what random_matt has said, and I would see if it's possible to move flats or get a studio if you can afford it that way you can use the kitchen properly. No one should have to live in such a state. Having a clean functioning kitchen means that you can meal prep and cook properly which means that you'd be saving money in the long run over eating out and getting frequent TESCO meal deals.
Have you tried raising these issues with the accommodation and residential life staff at your university? I would strongly recommend that you get in touch with them to get this issue resolved. Communicating with your flatmates can also be a solution. Maybe you can have a rota when it comes to who cleans the kitchen and what time each flatmate cooks so that everyone has an equal chance to make use of the kitchen, and it stays clean regularly.
Hope this helps, Imane Placement-Year Languages student

i did try looking for another room but my accommodation don’t let you transfer. i haven’t been on a weekly shop since january because i just hate being in the kitchen and my food always ended up going to waste since i would just put it in the fridge and leave it. i really do enjoy cooking but only when im at home because i just don’t rlly wanna run into one of my flatmates whilst im cooking and i just constantly felt paranoid that one of them would come in whilst im cooking.

there’s not really any way i can get through to them only me and one other would clean up after them whenever they had pres and take the bins out etc but now i’ve stopped using the kitchen at all. also i did try to see if id be able to change my flat but i can’t do that with my current accommodation and i don’t really think my parents would be willing to help me fund a new place to live.

You know you could request an intervention from the accommodation team.

Is it possible to still have you and the other flatmate clean up then? Or you could try to designate parts of the kitchen yourself and the other clean flatmate if that's possible, that way at least part of the kitchen is clean. I'd still try to contact the accomodation team again (chase the issue) and random_matt has given sound advice so far. Maybe both of you can complain.
Furthermore, is there anything written in your accomodation policy and handbook when it comes to the use of share facilities? From what I've heard, when you share a kitchen, each flatmate is entitled to one shelf in the fridge and one draw in the freezer. If you're not getting that space (as your OP states that you're unable to use the fridge), and your university states that entitled to this, I'd complain. You're basically paying money for stuff that you can't use properly. Your university might also have rules and standards when it comes to how clean the kitchen needs to be.
I hope that you can get the issue resolved.

i just meant that i can’t use the fridge because my food goes off anyway since i don’t go in the kitchen anymore. also im not sure if the university accommodation team can do anything since its private accommodation (i did apply for university halls but got allocated this)

Hi,
Even if you live in private accommodation, there should still be an on-site team who can help deal with issues like this. You can also contact your university's accommodation team directly and explain your current living situation - they might be able to find you a place in a university halls (sometimes places become available if students choose to leave during the term) or help you find alternative housing.
Ordering food online isn't necessarily bad in and of itself, but it can be expensive when you're on a student budget and you should be able to use your own kitchen without feeling worried about one of your flatmates disturbing you.
Hope this helps and best of luck, Eve (Kingston Rep).

Do you live in student accommodation though? (even if that happens to be private).
As Kingston Eve states, there should still be an accommodation team of some sort that you can speak to, even if you don't live in university owned student halls, but instead live in private student accomodation. There will also probably still be rules in place (a handbook or contract or code of conduct) that you and your flatmates would have agreed to when getting the accommodation.
