University entrance essay

Hi,

I’ve been asked to do an entry essay for a social work university application. Does anyone know what the correct layout is for referencing your quotes?

Hi,
Great question! The correct layout for referencing quotes in your entry essay depends on the referencing style required by the university. Social work programs typically use APA (American Psychological Association) style, but it's always best to check the university's guidelines. Here’s a quick guide on how to reference quotes in APA format:
In-Text Citations:

1.

For short quotes (fewer than 40 words):

2.

Place the quote in quotation marks and include the author's last name, year of publication, and page number in parentheses.

3.

Example: According to Thompson (2020), "effective social work practice relies on empathy and communication" (p. 45).

4.

For long quotes (40 words or more):

5.

Format it as a block quote (indented 0.5 inches from the left, without quotation marks).

6.

Example:
Social work practice requires a strong ethical foundation. As noted by Johnson (2019): Social workers must adhere to a set of professional ethics that guide their practice. These include respect for diversity, confidentiality, and a commitment to advocating for vulnerable populations. Without these principles, the profession cannot effectively serve communities. (p. 112)

Reference List Entry (APA 7th Edition Format):
At the end of your essay, list full details of all sources used in a separate References section. The format for a book is: Author, A. A. (Year). Title of the book. Publisher. Example: Thompson, J. (2020). Social work in practice: A guide for students. Oxford University Press.
For journal articles, websites, or other sources, make sure to follow the specific APA guidelines for those formats.
If your university requires Harvard, MLA, or Chicago style, the formatting will differ slightly. Let me know if you need guidance on a different style!
Good luck with your application! 😊 If you need more assistance, feel free to reach out
