Rent at york city vs rent at st.andrews

I am applying for phd positions at both the university of york and the university of st. Andrews. I am waiting for their final decision but i wanna make up my mind. The stipend is 19000 per year.

Which city is more affordable to live in? I know which project i favor but am trying to look at the whole picture.

Considering that i want to live in a private studio not shared house.
Hi there,
I have been living in York for the past 4 years and I will be honest, it isn't cheap. If your plan is to live alone then you will have to cover the cost of your bills alone which could amount to 100-160£ as a rough estimate each month (depending on the ratings and the companies you go with). Some places have bills included in the rent price. Rent for a studio that is furnished can be around 1000£ per month but would be cheaper for you in shared accommodations. In terms of groceries, I typically spend ~40£ per week just for me. If you are hesitant about who you may live with in share accommodation then a possible solution would be to rent a private studio the first year and then look for people that you would want to live with for the following years. It would just make living in York much more affordable and would potentially allow for better savings.

I don't know how this compares to St Andrews but York is a great place to live and there are so many opportunities around here for things to do and places to visit.

Just to be clear, these are just some estimates based on my experience and prices change all the time so be aware that they won't reflect exactly what you may encounter.

Hands down York. Outside of London, it's one of the most expensive (I'm the bill payer for a student in York!). St Andrews is cheaper.

However, you may have more choice of accommodation as St Andrews is a much smaller place than York.

But, do consider the importance of choosing the course that is best for you.

Good luck!

I like the course at york better🥹 how much on average is rent for a small studio. Even if not so close to uni? I would appreciate any info i can get. I am from outside the uk. So i don’t know much about how to look.

For a studio off campus you’re talking around and upwards of £300 a week, but that is often bills included

Check out Sinclair Properties, they’re a student letting company in York with over 300 properties. I live in one of their houses and think they’re brilliant to deal with and lots of choice in properties

Yes it will more than likely be at least £250 a week. Just search into Google “student studios to rent in York” and check out some of the websites, get a feel for what’s on offer and if it suits you
