University Experience & What do I bring?

i am planning on going to Leicester for university but will be commuting and am worried about making friends as I wont have as big of a social life within Leicester. I am also Muslim and therefore am restricted in terms of various social events that might involve drinking and partying. I also am unsure of what to bring to university, like do i need a laptop and a pad or is one enough?
Any tips would be helpful…

I would say that bringing a laptop is a necessity at university that way you can readily access the material in lecturers, do work on the go and at home. I'd also recommend having a notepad (paper) or a note-taking device along with basics like such as a pencil case.

Also tagging @UoL Students so that they can hopefully provide advice.

Hello,

It is great to hear that you are considering coming to the University of Leicester and we very much look forward to welcoming you to the University. Firstly, there are many students who do commute to University and so you will not be the only one. There are also lots of ways to make friends both on your course and through societies which you will still be able to access despite being a commuting student.

Leicester is a plural city meaning there is no majority race group which means it is very diverse and you will not be the only Muslim student. There will be lots of events in the local community and run by student societies for Muslim students like yourself and so you will definitely find your community and friends.

I would highly recommend a laptop if you have one because we use Blackboard which is a virtual learning environment where lecture PowerPoint and recordings are uploaded. This is also how you will submit coursework. When it comes to taking notes that is up to you, you can either use your laptop or take handwritten notes, which psychology suggests is better.

I hope this helps, what is it that you plan to study? If you have any further questions please do not hesitate to let me know, we are eager to help!

Hello @Anonymous

I hope you are well and I am excited to hear that you are planning on going to the University of Leicester!

Although I am not a commuter myself, I have met many people on my course that do commute! I would say that Leicester has a large amount of commuter students and an advantage of this is that commuter students often go to the library/social spaces in gaps during their lectures instead of going home. This provides a fantastic opportunity to meet other students! Additionally, a few of my friends commute and they feel as though it has not impacted their social lives. The only downside is that they will sometimes stay on campus until 6/7pm to attend society events etc. but they don't mind it.

Furthermore, Leicester is a very diverse university with a large muslim population. Therefore, there are lots of social activities that do not involve alcohol, and for those that do, there are non-alcoholic options provided. I personally would not describe Leicester as a university where there is a pressure/need to consume alcohol in order to have fun.

I also agree with Charlie. A laptop is incredibly useful to have at university as a large amount of learning is done digitally (e.g. course materials are uploaded online, assignments are submitted online).

I hope this helps and feel free to ask any further questions.
