TSR Community awards 2024: feedback and suggestions

This is a thread for all feedback and suggestions regarding the Community Awards on :tsr:

A number of changes have been made this year, including:
- Having polls private for the entirety of the voting period
- One small change to the stats-based awards that aren't subject to a vote

In addition, the volunteer team have also launched the TSR Hall of Fame, which exists separately to the community awards but feedback on this is welcome to be left here too.

In this thread, you are welcome to post suggestions regarding:
- New awards we could have
- Awards you think should be removed
- Changes to criteria
- Changes to the format and process of the awards

Please do not:
- Make personal comments about other users
- Make any targeted comments about the VT, VSLs or CS
- These will be removed and carded severely

Maybe there could be reward for chat (I am aware of the previous reasoning on why there's no award for chat) like there is for every other forum.

Other than that, nice community awards, I think that they were really good this year.
So the Chat section doesn't have its own award.
Several reasons:
- For a long time it didn't have an award, because it wasn't a section. Most other section-based awards date back ten years, some of them have origins 20 years ago. That's not a reason to exclude chat, but it is a reason to keep the other awards and is a reason why Chat hasn't had a new one created.

- It doesn't lean itself to the "most helpful in..." sort of category, or any of the equivalents descriptors that other sections have. Hard to go for "chattiest" when that's rather similar to several other awards (see below).

- Several other awards already lean themselves towards Chat: funniest, friendliest, most creative are all likely to come from active users in chat most of the time, as well as (to a lesser extent) member of the year, member with the best avatar(s), favourite newbie and oldie.

- There are already 20 awards, careful attention should be paid before adding more to that, or consider which one you would remove in order to create an award for the Chat section.

Yep, I was aware of this (reasoning) already when giving the feedback.

I’d say best thread of 2024 and most useful thread could overlap :dontknow: (not suggesting that one of these awards get removed) or that most creative member could potentially be changed (similar to what happened to best debater)?

@sdfj (only tagging because you raised this first this year I think).

Also thank you for the response.
Just to say that I thought the Hall of Fame was a lovely addition.

Thanks for the tag! I'd like to see an award for chat, but I'm not really that fussed.

Edit: I said this in the other thread but I liked the way the community awards were run this year! The hall of fame looks like a nice addition too...

It would be good to be a little bit more lenient on the Newbie Award because

1.

You could create your account very late in the year so barely anyone knows you by the end of the year meaning (under current rules) you'll never be eligible for favourite newbie.

2.

You could create an account and write no posts or 1 post, forget about your account and then suddenly come back later the next year meaning (under current rules) you'll never be eligible for favourite newbie.

It would also be nice to have a category of Best Non TSR staff/volunteer to celebrate those who give time to the site without working or volunteering for TSR.

The last point is an interesting suggestion and I can’t remember whether I suggested this or not.

Maybe the simplest solution is to have volunteers (FH+VT+VSL) ineligible for the Member of the Year Award and instead only have that award open to Staff, regular members and possibly official reps (assuming that official reps are already eligible for the award, if they are not then don’t have them become eligible).

This one's come up before - all volunteers, forum helpers and staff members are still users of the website, members of the community and subject to the same terms and conditions. The extra things we do are in addition to the fundamental role of community member, not separate from that position.

This would leave members eligible to win best newbie two years in a row, how would you mitigate this?

For the first point: this was my situation - I created my account on Christmas Eve in 2023 and didn't use it again till the start of GCSE season. But... I think it's better to be rigid with the Newbie award (and not allow users like me to be shortlisted) - just makes things less complicated I guess.

I don't think the second idea is a good one though unless the VT and Forum Helpers are excluded from Member of the Year, as Toad said above. Seems a bit weird to single out and exclude those who make the biggest contribution to the site in any of the awards?

It's really unlikely that someone would nominate someone for Favourite Newbie if they've only been on the site since sometimes in December and I don't think someone would be nominated if they've got 0 or very little posts. You could also create an end of November cutoff for favourite newbie.

What do you think of my first suggestion?

I’m opposed to it personally but others might have a different opinion.

I mean I joined later in the year albeit not in December but still got nomination and third place for favourite newbie.

We had a nomination this year from an account that joined in December.
They would be eligible for best newbie 2025 as well under the proposal.

Oh!
Maybe it's a good idea to leave it as it is then.

Changing the wording of "Best Thread" might be good. You could change it to Funniest, Hilarious, Entertaining or Unifying Thread instead.

Entertaining makes it the same in my opinion, funniest, I’m not sure.
