Chemistry Grade Boundaries

Hi, I was wondering if anyone knew why alevel chemistry grade boundaries seemed almost disproportionate to other STEM/humanity subjects when I thought it was generally accepted to be a harder one? I know the curve is not a true bell curve but this seems strange to me.

If a subject is difficult to get marks in then the boundaries are lower.
If a subject is easier to get marks in then the boundaries are higher.
The same rough percentage of students get each grade in each subject because as you said its graded on a curve.

oh yes I get that thank you, I was just sharing anectodal information that at my college and other close ones students seem to underperform in chemistry yet the grade boundaries are higher than subjects deemed easier and wondered if it was a trend anywhere else

I mean I could be making assumptions here but a lot of 'smarter' people take subjects like chemistry, physics, further maths etc. and score very highly and that pushes the grade boundaries up. Compared to something like business where a lot of people taking it are unserious or didn't get the grades needed to take something else (no offense to business students tho).

Thats interesting, I dont do chem so not sure. Have you checked the actual a level grade boundaries? Its possible your school either uses their own grade boundaries from student scores which are higher than the national average but still uses standard papers or that they use a level grade boundaries but their own papers.

I hadn't thought of that! It makes sense though, especially as stem subjects give less unconditionals, thanks!

This is what my chemistry teacher told us. It's the subject people mostly have to take if they want to do competitive courses like med, dentistry, vet med. so basically many of the brightest students take it which pushes up the grade boundaries compared to other subjects
