A level choices

I’m applying to Cardiff and Vale College to do 4 a levels and an EPQ, so I have to do 4 if I want to do EPQ. I want to study medicine in uni after so I’m definitely going to do chem, bio, physics and I’m unsure about maths. If I don’t do maths, I don’t know what to pick, but if I do it, I’m worried about getting burnt out as I don’t really like the subject. I’m good at it, but don’t particularly love it. Any help?

I would definitely recommend maths - it is always a subject that uni's really like, even for medicine. I'm currently doing it rn and I'm not finding it too bad at all, but that obviously varies between people. If you got a 7+ in GCSE, I would say you should do it in your position. It is your best option for a 4th a level, but you don't need it, and considering you dislike it, that's something for you to weigh up.

I take psychology, bio and chem! I've applied for med and I already have 2 offers. Psych ties in really well with bio and chem, but I would suggest doing core maths too if your school offers it as it looks good to unis and it helps out a bit with science subjects x

You don't need 4 A levels for Medicine - it gives you no advantage at all, and is literally a waste of time.
And you don't need Maths either.

Remember there is no 'better' Uni for Medicine, the NHS wont care where you trained, and neither will you future patients.

I’m predicted a 9 in GCSE maths and I’m also doing additional maths and predicted an A which is the highest grade I can get in my exam board. I only dislike it cause I have too many subjects to do now for GCSEs. So if I do it for a levels, I will probably enjoy it. So thank you for all the advice. I will do maths as my 4th choice

Maths and Physics are very closely related, so that helps if you take them both.

Hi Idk23323_school,

Now that, that is something I was stressed about when I realized I wanted to do medicine after my first degree. I can't lie I absolutely hate math's with a passion, however, I believe that univerisities offering medicine prefer maths. I have taken a look at 4 universities & their A-level requirements & here is what I found:

University of Manchester: - Our standard A-level offer is AAA including:

Biology/Human Biology or Chemistry; and

One of the following subjects from Chemistry; Biology/Human Biology; Physics; Psychology; Mathematics or Further Mathematics.

University of Bristol: - AAA including Chemistry and either Biology, Physics, Mathematics or Further Mathematics. Graduates are required to obtain a 2:1 in their degree plus BBB at A-level, including Chemistry and either Biology, Physics, Mathematics or Further Mathematics

University of Oxford: -Required subjects: Chemistry with either Maths, Further Maths, Biology or Physics.

University of Leeds: - (this is for Medicine & Surgery --> A-level: AAA including Chemistry and Biology.
Those taking a fourth A2 subject will not be at an advantage to those taking three. We do not rate A* as being higher than A, so we will not accept A*A*B instead of AAA.

Let me know if you found this helpful.

Kind regards,
