What spec and topics would you be doing for RS and Business in your school?

both are edexcel

both are edexcel

Have you tried looking at the specification of the two subjects? I’d recommend briefly going through the specification to see what topics from each GCSE interest you more.

https://qualifications.pearson.com/en/qualifications/edexcel-gcses/business-2017.html (Business)

https://qualifications.pearson.com/en/qualifications/edexcel-gcses/religious-studies-a-2016.html (RS A)
https://qualifications.pearson.com/en/qualifications/edexcel-gcses/religious-studies-b-2016.html (RS B)

I’ll assume that you’re not doing iGCSEs.

Based on me looking at the specification for GCSE Business, the main topics seem to be:

For Theme 1
Topic 1.1 Enterprise and entrepreneurship - students are introduced to the dynamic nature of business in relation to how and why business ideas come about. They also explore the impact of risk and reward on business activity and the role of entrepreneurship.
Topic 1.2 Spotting a business opportunity - students will explore how new and small businesses identity opportunities through understanding customer needs and conducting market research. They will also focus on understanding the competition.
Topic 1.3 Putting a business idea into practice - this topic focuses on making a business idea happen through identifying aims and objectives and concentrating on the financial aspects.
Topic 1.4 Making the business effective - students will explore a range of factors that impact on the success of the business, including location, the marketing mix and the business plan.
Topic 1.5 Understanding external influences on business - students are introduced to a range of factors, many of which are outside of the immediate control of the business, such as stakeholders, technology, legislation and the economy. Students will explore how businesses respond to these influences.

For Theme 2
Topic 2.1 Growing the business - students are introduced to methods of growth and how and why business aims and objectives change as businesses evolve. The impact of globalisation and the ethical and environmental questions facing businesses are explored.
Topic 2.2 Making marketing decisions - students will explore how each element of the marketing mix is managed and used to inform and make business decisions in a competitive marketplace.
Topic 2.3 Making operational decisions - this topic focuses on meeting customer needs through the design, supply, quality and sales decisions a business makes.
Topic 2.4 Making financial decisions - students will explore the tools a business has to support financial decision making, including ratio analysis and the use and limitation of a range of financial information.
Topic 2.5 Making human resource decisions - growing a business means that decisions relating to organisational structure, recruitment, training and motivation need to be made to influence business activity. These aspects are considered in this final topic.

The above was taken straight from the specification.

You should be able to find the specification for GCSE Geography for your exam board too.

I took Business and RS. Business is a good subject thought quite hard. Grades are tough esp in comparison to RS - easy 9 esp if you practice a religion you study - I am in y13! Business was definitely content harrd too, some maths and equations with lots on new concepts to get your head around. Unless your passionate, would not recommend! But defo RS!!

For people business is really easy (I’m not good at maths or English). I got a grade 8 in my year ten mocks with absolutely no revision. If you have a logical brain I’d pick business

my business thoughts would be completely different to the post above, it really isn't as hard as people thing, literally you start form basics as it is new subject i did it in year 10 and year 11 and i am pretty sure i got a 9 on every test expect the first test which i was 1 mark of a 9, they will teach you exam structure for business questions and if you revise the exam answer structure, lets say for a 3 marker it is the SAME for every 3 marker, if you know your paragraph structure you sorted and the content isnt even that hard, youu just remember the content and go apply it with paragraph structure and you will do well.

i didnt do geography but form hearing for a lot of my friend wo did do it, the subject does have a lot of content just like any other subject expect for PE, and if you are good at writing long answer to questions, big mark questions then you will be fine !
its just a like analysis based subject.
I dont know anything about RE srry.
Plus dont worry about what subjects you do at GCSE it literally doesn't matter it is just a stepping stone for a levels, they just want to know if you can pass maths and english and pass at least like 5 gcse before doing A level which matter. Literally i am in year12 now and i look back at GCSE's and i am like GCSE wasn't even that hard i dont know why worried so much , it just a lot of content memory and test nothing too much, with practice GCSE is really not that hard for any subject.

i dont really know anything about geography
all my friends do business, and i take RE so i can help you with those (im in year 11 now, just did my mocks last month)

first of all for RE, its firstly a really fun subject and i find it to be really interesting (and its always nicer picking the more interesting subjects because then youll enjoy it in class and automatically pay attention more). its also honestly quite easy, i havent been revising content tbf just speedrunning quotes the day before (bc u cant make them up obviously so thats something you have to know) and i still got a 9 in my mock. most people in my class find it really easy compared to other subjects, and yeah like someone above said if you practice one of the religions then its defo easier. most schools do Christianity and Islam which is easy bc most of their beliefs are similar, its just some different Islamic practices that tend to need a bit more work on if you arent familiar with the religion. but check which religions your school does, because in the unlikely situation that they do something different it might be a bit harder, but id say still very managable

as for business, as i said i dont take it but all of my friends do so im always hearing stuff about it (also i was like you in year 9 and wondering between RE and business). i would say dont take it. idk if its just bc the teachers in my school arent the best for business, but people definitely get lower grades in it than RE. im also always hearing about how its really boring, and they wish they had taken other stuff. its one of those subjects that isnt super hard like a science or something but you still gotta spend a lot of time revising it because theres quite a bit of content and the exam technique tends to be very specific (unlike RE in which i could use 'love thy neighbour' in literally all of my questions and still get the mark).

personally im super happy that I chose RE over business, and a few of my friends have said they wish they did the same (i havent heard anyone say it the other way around). but obviously its down to your choice, and ik that theres lots of people on here who would support you with revising and learning any subject if you end up having difficulties, so dont worry that much.

business does not have much content i did it last year, there isnt even that much and all of it is pretty much common sense, the reason why people find it boring is that they expect it to be so technically and so cool but it is just learning about like entrepreneurship and how a business runs and how it finances it self and, how business are sold and merged and things. It is a good subject if you dont want hard content to learn. I had to do 11 GCSE in my school and this one was def the easiest for me, i came out the test and i was like yea i know i got a 9.

My friends who do business have described it as math 2.0, but I don't know all the people who I know dropped it. But maybe you will enjoy it I don't know.

Reply 12

Also you can drop stuff within the first couple of weeks. Well, my school lets students do that maybe yours does.

Reply 13

MATHS 2.0???? are you out of your mind, there is like 3 equations to learn in 2 years , percentage change and other ones
this isn't economics, dropping business is wild

Hi I took business at GCSE and I would say it is quite straightforward (i did the AQA spec but it is very similar to others). It is very content heavy though so if you are taking RS with it i would say be cautious of how many things you will need to memorise. I did not take RS but had many friends who did and they enjoyed it very much.

hey I’m a year 11 student who does business , and I would 100% recommended it , to me it’s really easy and fun , I’m going to probably also take it for A-levels even though I’m not interested in it I took it as a fun A-Level as i was planning to take 2 serious ones (bio and chem) however business is not for everyone I’m aware of that, but for me it was really easy although I was predicated a P2 i got a D2* easily

hi i'm a y11 student! i did both geography (edexcel b) - option and rs (aqa) - compulsory at my school and i would say rs is so so much easier than geography. yes, rs has a lot of content but i think geography has even more. plus geography content is harder to learn than rs because with rs, you have more experience with it in real life and is not too difficult to remember. however, i would say geography is more useful as an a level or even just for your general knowledge, some unis really like geography as it shows more of a balance in your subjects as well as being humanity. as well as this, ppl say it's good to take either geography or history so it may be good. honestly, whichever one you choose comes down to your needs. if you have practically no interest in either and just need a good grade easily, i would say rs. it is a lot of work but once you nail the exam technique, it's fine. as with geography, if the skills and learning for the future is more important to you, and you are passionate about it, i would say go for that.
ik this isn't rly giving you an answer and is more of a balanced, chatgpt type response, but i genuinely just want your options to match your needs.

hii i do edexcel business and edexcel b geography. personally, i enjoy them both: geography has really interesting topics in the human side and is a good base for many careers and a level choices (about how the world works: physically, economically and how it develops). some may say gcse business is more common sense but it's more the exam technique and application of knowledge that gets people down. edexcel business is cut down into two parts: studying small businesses and more global application (big businesses) and topics include sources of finance, external influences to business e.g. inflation. it is a good subject to pick, especially if you're interested in going down the route.

I don't do business but I do geography and rs. personally I really like geography and don't think it's too hard but I really regret picking re.i loved re in y9 but now in y10 I find it really hard and boring. I picked it because I enjoyed it and I was told I'd find it easy but neither of those are true. it is different for everyone though as some of my friends love re and hate geography 😭
