cambridge english offer holder gyg :)

hey! I'm a Year 13 (I study Media, English Lit and History) who has been ROTTING the last few days and needs to prepare for mocks + acc a-levels so this is to hold me accountable haha

I have an offer of A*AA from Downing College for English (any English applicants, feel free to ask any questions about the application cycle <3) and I'm hoping to post daily with at least three study relate things I've done that day

I have a vague understanding of how gtg works, but I'm excited to talk to all of you x

17/02/25:

I started veryyyy late today (9PMish) but I managed to read through my outstanding Rosetti poems and assign theme(s) to them. also chose 10 from the list of 30 to annotate over half-term along with my Larkin/Duffy set.

for tomorrow, I'd like to annotate one/two Larkin/Duffy/Rosetti (at least 4 poems total), review my gizmo history flashcards (deck 1) and complete my media coursework front cover

Hi, I’m a Year 12, planning on applying for English at Cambridge this year. Congratulations on your offer! What did you do for supercurriculars please, is there anything you would particularly recommend? Thanks.

Hey! I got a 9 in English Lang. I would say make sure to do lotsss of practice questions as that’s really the only way to really improve. Make sure to pay special attention to to Paper 1 Question 3 when analysing structure as that’s the question that trips most people up; the best way to answer that question is go from beginning, middle and end and pick out at least three distinctive structural feature to comment on from the extract. Reading widely, fiction and non-fiction, will also help you, course. Hope that helps 🙂

Ah, thank you! And the best of luck with your application!

I’ll try and list all my supercurriculars:

Reading (of course)*

Podcasts/Lectures (I rarely listened to podcasts, but I liked listening to lectures based off the books I read when I was doing coursework)

Sutton Trust programme

Tower Poetry Competition*

Bookshop Volunteer*

Editor of my college newspaper*

Attended poetry club (we did deep dives of poets each week and also wrote poetry)

English Tutor (although that’s also my part time job tho)*

Wrote, co-starred in and directed a short film*

Attended theatre*

Read critical opinions*

Andddd that’s all, think! Any * were included/discussed in my personal statement. I hope this helps!

This is brilliant advice and so helpful, thank you so much! It’s given me the idea to set up a poetry club at my school.
