Oxford History MSt/MPhil 2025 (all strands)

Hi, all!

I just wanted to make a dedicated thread for potential master's students in History this coming Fall. I applied right before the 7 Jan deadline (for the Intellectual History strand), and I have not heard anything back yet.

Best of luck to everyone!

Hi, I applied just before the deadline too - haven't heard anything back yet. Have you applied anywhere else?

Twin! And, no, I did not apply anywhere else. I have another research-related thing in the works, but it's not a degree program.

I applied November 28 for an MPhil in US History and also have not heard back. I am hoping they get to me next week. Gotta apply for jobs if all this doesn't pan out!

Best of luck, truly! If they are genuinely sticking to the "8-10 weeks post deadline" timeline, then we might not hear back for another two weeks, at least. However, like you, I hope it's sooner!

Date of submitted application: October 20th (for the Januarydeadline)

What’s the button that everyone is talking about on the main thread?

After you click "View Full Application Details," if there's not an option to click a button that says "Supporting Documents," then a decision has been made on your application, or so the (seemingly very accurate) theory goes.

Hi guys,

I am a DPhil applicant, but seeing as no DPhil History thread exists, I shall post here!

Strand: U.S. History.
College preference: Pembroke.

I applied just before the January 7th deadline. I have a master's in history from LSE and am currently undertaking a master's in legal and constitutional studies at St Andrews.

In case it is of interest to anyone: I recieved distinction in my master's from LSE and am on track to recieve distinction in my master's at St Andrews. My undergraduate grades, however, are the US equivalent of mid 2:1, I believe.

Also, my potential supervisor is enthusiastic about my project but says he has no inside information on the current status of my application.

Hi everyone, also a DPhil applicant here. Did undergrad and Masters at Oxford too.

Fellow DPhil applicants (or master's, if this applies), which supervisor(s) are you hoping to work with?

Managed to convince Rob Iliffe and Steve Tuffnell to cosupervise. But personally I'm hoping to go to Cambridge bc supervision arrangement is better and i've been at Oxf for too long lol

My project (looking at "vitalism" in Leibniz and Canguilhem) is in that odd interstice between intellectual history and history of science, so pinning down an advisor was/is/will be hard. I put down Rob Iliffe (we corresponded a bit, but I haven't heard from him since December), Alex Aylward, Howard Hotson, and Avi Lifschitz as people who might be interested in the project. I contacted Paul Lodge (Philosophy), who's a Leibniz expert, but he said that he couldn't advise (even conjointly) across Faculties :frown:

Have you emailed him (Rob Iliffe) since December? I hope they find you a supervisor, yours sounds like a great project!

Ooh that sounds really fascinating. I know that Alex won't be able to advise bc I also approached him and he said he's on a fixed term contract so can't take on PhD students. I don't know the other two though. Rob seemed really nice when I met with him in October, and he was very open to having students so hopefully that works out for you.
