Degrees - Chem, Biochem, Microbiology or (unlikely) medicine

Hi! I'm in y12 doing Bio,.Chem, Maths and Eng Lit and every time I try and pick a degree I get more and more uncertain as to what choice I should make. Academically I love Chemistry and the idea of sustainable/pharmaseutical Chemistry as a career appeals, but I also don't want to work in a lab for 40 years just me and the test tubes. Biochemistry/the study of disease sounds fascinating and would open lots of doors including grad entry med if I ever wanted to go that way, but I'm not sure how easy it is to break into the pharmaseutical industry and I'm also concerened by the fact that I've found some A level Bio stuff quite dry and I'm not sure how much I'd get to leave behind. Med would be cool but the work life balance isn't and I'm partially sighted which would compicate surgery or emergency medicine. Any information from anyone doing any of these degrees/hybrids eg Biological and Medicinal Chemistry or anyone in my position who knows something I don't would be great. Thanks!

Chemistry (with medicinal chemistry) may well be a good option. If you genuinely love the subject, it’s definitely well worth considering.

As far as I know, all chemistry degrees have RSC accreditation which means that the Royal Society of Chemistry has decided the course provides all the necessary skills for employment (presumably both in chemistry and related careers and also in unrelated careers). As such, you have a lot of options upon graduation if you do a chem degree and so you won’t spend four decades rotting away in a lab with a few test tubes. You should also have good access to a number of postgrad qualifications as well.

I can’t speak for the other options, though I imagine they will be similarly good for employment purposes.

Thanks, that's really helpful!

As far as I've seen, most biochemistry courses are basically biology at a very small scale (think proteins, phospholipid membranes, Krebs cycle, ect) so if that's not your thing, go for something more chemistry heavy
