I rlly enjoy computing and was hoping to get into security of it in uni, however many people are telling me that most unis require maths. For gcse I got an 8 however I dont feel confident switiching to maths, what should i go into, at uni??
Something fascinating, computing related, with a good future for employment & salary !!

Hello! As someone who also really enjoys computing, most unis require maths A-level (and prefer you even more if you have FM A-level) but if you were looking for alternate routes into your desired field you could absolutely look into apprenticeships as different level apprenticeships may have different requirements that don't include maths and could even give you a route directly into industry.

Maths is crucial for CS at degree level - but there are a small number of 'Computer Security' degrees that don't require Maths. BSc (Hons) Computer Security Degree - Cardiff Metropolitan University as one example.

Hi @eshaalaaa !
I'm a final year computer science student at the uni of brighton.

There are quite a few universities that don't require maths for computer science, including brighton!
If your interested in going into cyber security, we offer a Computer Science with cyber security degree!
We also have a lot of other computing degrees such as:
Computer Science
Comp Sci with AI
Comp Sci with Cyber Security
Software engineering

And 2 games courses:
Comp Sci with games
Digital Games Development

The first year for all our Comp Sci courses are the same so you can switch between them if you decide you want to specialise differently. The same applies to the 2 games courses but you can't switch between comp sci and games courses.

None of these courses require a-level maths at all! Any maths that is needed is taught in the lectures (and in my experience it was only a little bit of maths in the intro to AI module in first year)

Brighton focuses on teaching you how to work in the industry rather than theoretical computing.
Brighton is also Top 20 in the UK for value-added (which compares students’ degree results with their entry qualifications to show how effectively they are taught) proving that students go further at Brighton(Guardian University Guide 2025)

I would also recommend going to an open day and talk to lecturers and students, they can be really helpful in giving advice and guidance on what to do.

I hope this helps, if you have any questions feel free to ask!
